Description
Shinnosuke Nohara, nicknamed Shin-chan, is a five-year-old boy living in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He is the son of Hiroshi and Misae Nohara and older brother of Himawari. Shin-chan resembles his mother, inheriting her eyes and stubbornness, while sharing his father's hair color and tendency to flirt with older women.

He displays a complex blend of immaturity and unexpected wisdom. His mischievous behavior frequently involves pulling down his pants to perform the "buri buri" dance (also called the "wiggly wiggly" or "super cute" dance) while singing original songs like "Buttock Alien." Shin-chan exhibits shamelessness, outspokenness, and insensitivity, often using scatological humor or inappropriate language, including mixed-up greetings and mispronounced words. Despite this, he demonstrates surprising maturity and kindness in critical moments, such as saving a frog despite ruining his clothes, giving money to his friend Masao knowing he would face scolding, and protecting his sister Himawari. He shows deep concern for his family, particularly his mother, despite frequently teasing her.

Shin-chan's interests include eating Chocobi chocolate corn biscuits, watching the superhero show "Action Mask," and avoiding green peppers. He possesses unexpected talents in activities like running, surfing, kendo, fishing, skiing, swimming, baseball, football, and singing. He often dresses in drag or animal costumes and is a member of the "Kasukabe Defence Force" (KB) alongside his friends Toru Kazama (whom he considers his closest friend), Nene Sakurada, Masao Sato, and Bo Suzuki. Shin-chan shows little romantic interest in peers, instead fixating on older women like college student Nanako Oohara, often using flirting phrases such as "Do you like green peppers?" or "Hey, baby, you like onions?" This trait mirrors his father and paternal grandfather and often results in maternal punishment.

A recurring element involves his protective relationship with Himawari, central to the film *Crayon Shin-chan: Pursuit of the Balls of Darkness*. In this film, Shin-chan discovers a mystical ball later swallowed by Himawari. The family is abducted by the Tamayura clan (transvestite siblings Rose, Lavender, and Lemon), who seek to prevent the ball's use in reviving a dark entity called Jack. Throughout the ensuing chase involving the antagonist clan Tamayumi and the psychic Hexon, Shin-chan prioritizes his sister's safety. His accidental insertion of the balls into Jack's statue reveals Jack's powerlessness, and his humor disrupts Hexon's psychic abilities, aiding in the family's escape.

Shin-chan's background includes an apocryphal story suggesting he was based on a real child, Shinnosuke Nohara, who died saving his sister in a car accident, with his mother creating sketches that inspired Yoshito Usui. Officially, however, the character originated as a spin-off of Shinnosuke Nikaido from Usui's earlier manga *Darakuya Store Monogatari*. His development consistently balances crude antics with moments of selflessness and loyalty, particularly evident in his unwavering protection of Himawari during the film's events and his consistent care for her in the series.
