Description
Jil is the sixteen-year-old protagonist of the narrative, a young adventurer whose primary dream is to reach the summit of the Tower of Druaga and become a revered champion. His name is likely a reference to an alternate shorter name for the hero-king Gilgamesh, and his appearance is said to resemble a younger version of that legendary figure. He is characterized by a strong will and deep determination, though he initially harbors naive and idealistic fantasies about what being a hero entails.

Jil begins his journey as a member of a climbing party led by his older brother, Neeba. However, he is fired from this group for perceived incompetence in battle, a dismissal that highlights his lack of experience and his brother's low opinion of his potential. After this humiliating setback, he forms his own party, attracting the attention of a mysterious priestess named Kaaya and a stoic warrior woman named Ahmey. He later recruits additional members, including the mage Melt and his young companion Coopa.

Personality-wise, Jil is defined by his pure heart and selflessness, consistently putting the safety of others before his own. He is notably thick-skulled and naive, yet this is coupled with an unshakeable spirit. An exceptional physical attribute is his extreme resilience and toughness; he possesses a superhuman ability to endure tremendous punishment, capable of remaining standing after a severe beating that would fell most others. This resilience is matched by considerable physical strength, as his armor is very heavy. When he removes this armor, he demonstrates incredible speed, having been relieved of its considerable weight.

In combat, Jil serves as a defensive-class Guardian, initially fighting with a shield that features a retractable spike in one hand and any makeshift weapon, typically a stick, in the other. His abilities include deflecting ballistics and heavy attacks, and he is even capable of blocking the powerful energy beams of the demon Druaga on several occasions. He can also cast protective barriers with his shield, a power that is likely augmented by Kaaya's enhancement magic. As his journey progresses, his equipment improves; he eventually receives one of the two swords belonging to King Gilgamesh, which was entrusted to Kaaya to pass on to him.

The defining tragedy of his early story occurs during the initial battle against the demon Druaga, where he witnesses Ahmey being killed. This event plunges Jil into intense self-doubt, causing him to believe his brother's harsh predictions about his failures were correct. Encouraged by the ghost of a spirit named Ki, he overcomes his despair and takes over as the party's leader, devising the strategy that ultimately leads to Druaga's defeat. He delivers the final blow by using Ahmey's own weapon, which was still embedded in the demon. However, his moment of victory is shattered when Neeba and Kaaya betray him, shooting him in the back with an arrow and causing him and the others to fall into a whirlpool. He survives this betrayal, but emerges from the experience deeply scarred.

Six months after this betrayal, Jil is living with his ally Fatina and a retired soldier named Kelb, suffering from a state of depression and burdened by what happened. He has become reclusive and withdrawn. His motivation to climb again is rekindled by a young girl who is the physical form of the spirit Ki; she shows him a vision of Kaaya being killed if he does not take her to the true top of the tower. Driven by a need to learn the fates of his betrayers, Kaaya and Neeba, he assembles a new party that includes Fatina, the warrior Utu, and a mage named Henaro. They are later reunited with old friends like Melt and Coopa. At the apex of the tower, Jil finally confronts his brother Neeba. Despite his armor and shield being destroyed in the climactic battle, he manages to defeat Neeba and survives the subsequent collapse of the tower.
