Description
Ana Coppola is an eleven-year-old girl originally from Cornwall, England, who moved to Japan during kindergarten and has lived there ever since with her family. She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, which makes her self-conscious among her predominantly dark-haired classmates. Her family is wealthy, living in a large Western-style house with a lawn and a fancy gate-buzzer.
Sophisticated, well-mannered, and polite, Ana possesses deep knowledge of Japanese culture, including complex kanji and traditions, and speaks exceptionally polite Japanese. Despite this, she initially pretends to speak only English upon entering her new school, introducing herself with simple English sentences. The pretense collapses when she instinctively helps a classmate open a door and speaks fluent Japanese, revealing her true ability. She then forms close friendships with Matsuri Sakuragi, Chika Ito, and Miu Matsuoka.
Ana feels discomfort about her surname Coppola, especially because Miu teases her by comparing it to a Japanese psychomime and writing it with the kanji for hole, bone, and cave. Nobue Ito also makes remarks about Ana’s developing chest. She dislikes broccoli and tomatoes, and when asked about foods she likes, she ultimately chooses Chika’s cookies. She owns a yellow Labrador retriever named Frusciante, whom Miu nicknames Fu-chan.
