Description
Ana Coppola, an 11-year-old girl originally from Cornwall, England, relocated to Japan during her kindergarten years and has lived there since. Her wealthy family resides in a large house with a lawn and a fancy gate-buzzer, uncommon in Japan. She transferred to a new school due to issues related to her last name.
With blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, her appearance stands out among her peers, contributing to her self-consciousness, especially about her light hair compared to the predominantly dark-haired students.
Sophisticated, well-mannered, polite, and fashionable, Ana became thoroughly immersed in Japanese culture despite her English background. On her first day at her new school, meeting Chika, Miu, and Matsuri, she pretended to speak only English. This plan failed when Matsuri overheard her speaking fluent, polite Japanese to herself. Ana struggled with simple English during class introductions, revealing her difficulty with the language after years in Japan.
Her cover was completely blown when she instinctively helped Matsuri open a door while speaking Japanese. Afterwards, she began walking home with Matsuri, alongside Chika and Miu, leading to the start of their friendship at Chika's house.
Miu frequently teases Ana because her surname, Coppola, resembles a Japanese psychomime. Miu nicknames her "Coppola-chan," which Ana intensely dislikes. The teasing escalated in the OVA when Miu wrote Ana's name in kanji characters meaning "hole," "bone," and "cave." Nobue also contributes to Ana's discomfort with repeated references to her developing chest.
Ana dislikes broccoli and tomatoes. When asked about foods she likes, she hesitated between natto and miso soup before ultimately choosing Chika's cookies. She owns a yellow Labrador named Frusciante, whom Miu nicknames "Fu-chan." Her speech reflects traditionally polite and feminine Japanese language patterns.
