Description
Tatsumi Sekiguchi is a crime fiction writer specializing in short stories, though this provides insufficient income, requiring frequent press work. He attended college with Akihiko Chuzenji, an onmyōji and bookstore owner, who often teases him about poor social skills within their ongoing friendship. Sekiguchi served alongside Tokyo police detective Shutarō Kiba in the same wartime military regiment, though specifics of his service remain obscure. Implied desertion and traumatic experiences may have triggered psychological disorders, fueling ongoing mental health struggles.

His dreamy, melancholic personality deeply permeates his writing, which explores fear, secrets, existential dread, and the blurred line between reality and illusion, often merging the absurd with the contemplative. He writes spontaneously without planning, yet fixates intensely on publication order. This contrasts with his reserved interpersonal demeanor: he maintains emotional distance, rarely sharing personal thoughts or feelings, projecting cold detachment despite a rich inner emotional life. Overt happiness is scarce, replaced by pensive introspection.

Sekiguchi is married to Yukie but keeps even close associates like Chuzenji and Kiba at arm’s length. During supernatural crime investigations, he collaborates methodically with news editor Morihiko Toriguchi to uncover truths. His wartime link to Kiba occasionally surfaces, though he evades discussing his past.

In the special *Hako no Yūrei no Koto*, Sekiguchi assists in dismemberment case investigations. A scene depicts him riding with Atsuko Chuzenji, dissecting unfolding events as he pieces together clues amid horrific circumstances. This special revisits the main narrative through Atsuko’s perspective, confirming his involvement.

Within the spin-off *The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei*, Sekiguchi appears as a supporting character. He encounters protagonist Kanna Kusakabe at a bookstore, offering insights on doppelgängers—supernatural doubles—during her investigation of lookalike sightings. His explanation initially reassures her but later proves inadequate as events escalate into deeper strangeness, displaying his esoteric knowledge and ties to Chuzenji’s world.
