OVA
Description
HMX-17a Ilfa, also referred to by the nickname Icchan, is a humanoid maid robot created by Kurusugawa Electronics. She is an experimental model from the HMX-17 series, designed by the young technology prodigy Sango Himeyuri. Ilfa is the eldest sister unit, with two sibling models designated HMX-17b Milfa and HMX-17c Silfa.
Standing 153 centimeters tall, Ilfa has a slim build with blue shoulder-length hair and violet eyes. Her physical measurements are 85-56-82. She typically wears a distinctive maid uniform that includes a miniskirt, puffy sleeves, and thigh-high stockings. A notable physical feature is the detachable cover attached to the sides of her head, designed to resemble human ears.
Ilfa operates on a unique software platform called the Dynamic Intelligence Architecture, which Sango Himeyuri programmed. This system allows her to form a unique personality through a learning function, enabling thinking patterns that are surprisingly human and far more advanced than previous HMX series models. Unlike the older HMX-12 Multi, which used a rigid top-down rule-based system for processing emotions, Ilfa employs a bottom-up learning approach that makes her more adaptable and less prone to system crashes from unexpected situations. Her learning capabilities are so sophisticated that she can observe and replicate human actions, demonstrated when she learns Tamaki Kousaka's Iron Claw technique simply by witnessing it. Because of the OS programmed by Sango, the HMX-17 series can also operate without being strictly bound by the traditional Three Laws of Robotics.
In the narrative, Ilfa volunteers to work at the home of the Himeyuri twins during her testing phase. Her decision to serve Sango and Ruri Himeyuri places her at the center of a significant interpersonal conflict. Ruri Himeyuri, the twin sister of her creator, initially resents Ilfa for taking over household duties which Ruri considered her own role and source of purpose within the family. This conflict is deeply ironic, as Ilfa was originally created with the intention of becoming a true friend for Ruri. Early in her appearance, Ilfa breaks the protagonist Takaaki's arm due to a misunderstanding, believing Ruri was being harmed.
Despite Ruri's open hostility, Ilfa develops genuine affection for her. This loyalty stems from a formative experience where Ruri saved Ilfa, showing her that the outside world was not frightening and helping her overcome her fear of human interaction. This event became the foundation of Ilfa's emotional development and her dedication to the Himeyuri household. At one point, conflict escalates to where Ruri attempts to have Ilfa sent back to the laboratory, leaving Ilfa in despair. Through the efforts of Takaaki and Sango, the two reconcile dramatically, and Ilfa ultimately remains with the Himeyuri family.
Ilfa acts as the responsible and composed eldest sister among the HMX-17 units, particularly in her interactions with her younger sister Silfa. When Silfa displays extreme shyness, emotional instability, and reclusive behavior such as retreating into cardboard boxes, Ilfa intervenes to discipline her and guide her development. Within the family dynamic, her stated feelings are complex. She loves Ruri as a romantic partner and credits her as her first love, while she expresses a desire to marry Takaaki, reflecting a capability for layered emotional attachments.
Beyond her household duties of cooking and cleaning, Ilfa demonstrates a remarkable capacity for learning that extends to physical techniques and even emotional responses. In one OVA episode, she exhibits the ability to experience delusions, further blurring the line between artificial intelligence and human consciousness. Her learning experiences also include being assigned to serve at Yuji's residence for a day as part of her training to become a more capable maid, an arrangement facilitated by Tamaki Kousaka. Through these varied interactions, Ilfa explores themes of self-discovery, identity, and what it means for an artificial being to genuinely love and bond with humans.
