Description
Kaoru Kaidoh, a second-year Seigaku Junior High student, wears a distinctive bandana—often green in the anime—and exhales a characteristic "fshuuu" hiss, earning him the nickname "Mamushi" (Viper). He resents this name when rivals like Takeshi Momoshiro or Akira Kamio use it flippantly. Born May 11 and standing 173 cm tall, his long limbs enhance his tennis reach. Kaidoh adheres to a rigorous daily schedule: waking at 5:00 AM for roadwork, running 25 km, balancing academics, club practice, and chores like room cleaning and ironing. His disciplined diet favors soba, yogurt, and 100% fruit juice. Academically, he excels in English but struggles with mathematics and science.
On court, Kaidoh specializes in endurance and counter-punching. His signature "Snake Shot"—a curving forehand derived from the "Buggy Whip Shot"—forces opponents into grueling rallies. Key evolutions include the "Boomerang Snake" (accidentally created against Fudomine's Kamio during rain, curving around the net post), "Short Snake" (targeting the net player's back), "Reverse Snake" (unpredictable direction shifts), and the high-speed gyro-spin "Tornado Snake." He also mastered Hiroshi Yagyuu's "Laser Beam," adapting it into the faster "Gyro Laser."
Though introverted with a stern demeanor that commands respect, Kaidoh reveals hidden sensitivity: he adores animals, especially Ryoma Echizen's cat Karupin, yet fears ghosts and supernatural themes. He blushes when praised. Acts of kindness define him, like rescuing a puppy from a river or protecting teammates—shielding Echizen from a stray ball or carrying an injured Momoshiro.
His growth is shaped by pivotal relationships. The rivalry with Momoshiro matures into a formidable doubles partnership, leveraging deep mutual understanding. Under Sadaharu Inui's mentorship, they form the "Emerald Pair," with Inui refining Kaidoh's techniques through data-driven training. Post-graduation, Kaidoh ascends to Seigaku captain, with Momoshiro as vice-captain, their rivalry mellowed into cooperative leadership.
In tournaments, Kaidoh's stamina proves decisive. During Tokyo finals against Fudomine, he overcame Kamio’s speed by persisting through deuce points to win 7–5. At Nationals against Higa Chuu, he won a doubles match solo, forbidding Inui's participation and abstaining from Snake shots to counter data exploitation. Later, against Hyotei, he unveiled the Tornado Snake to secure victory.
Beyond tennis, Kaidoh collects bandanas, enjoys Japanese literature and instrumental music, and frequents zoos to observe polar bears. His family includes parents and a younger brother; he shares a strong resemblance with his father, a bank employee.
