Setsuna Sakurazaki is a half-demon hanyō, born to a human and a Crow Demon (Karasu-Tengu Yōkai) from Kyoto. Albinism caused her distinctive white wings, contrasting her tribe's typical black wings, leading to exile as a bad omen. Rescued by Eishun Konoe and brought to Japan, she became the childhood friend and guardian of Konoka Konoe, daughter of the Kansai Magic Association's leader. After failing to prevent Konoka from falling into a river as a child, Setsuna distanced herself emotionally, adhering strictly to a protector role and addressing Konoka formally as "Ojō-sama" despite their past closeness.
Trained in Kyoto Shinmei-ryū swordsmanship and onmyō-jutsu, Setsuna wields the nodachi "Yūnagi" and specializes in anti-demon combat. She initially concealed her demon heritage from Konoka, fearing rejection. During a Kyoto field trip, Eastern mages targeted Konoka, forcing Setsuna to ally with Negi Springfield. To protect Konoka from demons, she formed a probationary Pactio contract with Negi, gaining the artifact "Sica Shishikushiro"—a wakizashi that splits into 16 clones to trap or electrocute foes. Her demon form was exposed while rescuing Konoka from the Great Demon God "Ryoumen Sukuna no Kami," violating her clan's mandate to eliminate witnesses. Negi's intervention prevented her departure, reconciling her with Konoka and allowing their relationship to rebuild.
Following the Kyoto events, Setsuna grew closer to Negi's allies, particularly Asuna Kagurazaka, training her in kendo and vowing to protect Negi together. She participated in the Mahora Festival's martial arts tournament, facing challenging matches against Asuna, Evangeline (who taunted her half-blood status), and Negi. When scattered across the Magic World after an ambush by Fate Averruncus, she protected Konoka from petrification using her wings but was separated. She later reunited with Asuna, witnessed Negi's battles, and rejoined the Ala Alba brigade. During a confrontation with Fate's cohort, she fought Tsukuyomi—a rival Shinmei-ryū practitioner—but was defeated and humiliated when stripped to her underwear, highlighting her struggle to balance human and demon instincts in combat.
Setsuna's abilities include flight via her wings, energy blasts like the "Raimeiken" lightning strikes, barriers such as "Shitenkekkai Dokkorenkaku," and summoning techniques like "Hyakkaryōran" petal blades. Her signature move, "Shinmeiryuu Kessen Ougi Shin Raikouken," channels lightning into a destructive explosion. As a hanyō, she possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, and enhanced senses for detecting spirits. Her character design reflects traits from Ken Akamatsu's earlier work, evolving the "serious warrior" archetype into one grappling with identity and loyalty across multiple story arcs.
