Description
Kaede Nagase is a student of Mahora Girls' Junior High, Class 3-A, holding the student number 20. Born on November 12, she is one of the tallest members of her class and possesses a calm, easy-going demeanor, often seen with her eyes almost closed. This gentle and composed exterior belies her immense physical strength and combat prowess.

Her background is rooted in the traditions of the Koga ninja clan, where she holds the rank of chunin. However, she was born a generation too late to receive formal training from her family, as her parents chose not to continue the clan's ninja traditions. As a result, much of her extensive ninja skills are self-taught through rigorous weekend training sessions in the mountains.

Kaede's personality is marked by a deep-seated maturity and a supportive nature. She speaks with an archaic samurai dialect, frequently ending her sentences with "de gozaru" and addressing others with the honorific "-dono," which adds to her unique and anachronistic character. Despite her intelligence and tactical acumen in battle, she is a member of the academically struggling "Baka Rangers" study group, known as "Baka Blue," which places her among the lowest-scoring students on written tests. In her leisure time, she enjoys relaxing and eating pudding, while her notable dislike is frogs. She is a member of the Strolling Club alongside Fuka and Fumika Narutaki, acting as a mentor to the younger twins.

Motivationally, Kaede is driven by a personal commitment to self-improvement and protection. She does not initially seek out conflict but is quick to use her abilities to defend her friends and teacher, Negi Springfield. Her role in the story is crucial as one of Negi's earliest and most reliable guardians. She is the second student to discover Negi's secret magic, finding him in a forest during his conflict with Evangeline and helping to cheer him up. From that point, she becomes a steadfast ally, using her ninja arts to support him in numerous battles, including the rescue of Konoka Konoe in Kyoto where she defeated Kotaro Inugami, and during the Mahora Festival fighting tournament.

Her key relationships are built on mutual respect and camaraderie. She develops a close mentorship and friendly rivalry with the dog-demon Kotaro Inugami, suggesting they train together to become stronger. She also forms a significant, competitive rivalry with the mercenary Mana Tatsumiya after their fight during the Chao Lingshen arc ends inconclusively, with their contests extending into everyday life. Kaede serves as a surrogate maternal figure and guardian for Negi, offering not just combat support but also emotional stability. Her role as a teacher to the Narutaki twins further demonstrates her patient and guiding nature.

Kaede undergoes significant development from a solitary, self-taught ninja into a key tactical asset and protector of her group. Her skills are consistently tested and refined against powerful foes, from Kotaro to Albireo Imma. After being scattered into the magical world, she is found slaying dragons, showcasing her continuous growth. Her development culminates in the Magic World arc when she forms a pactio with Negi, becoming his ninth partner. This contract grants her the artifact Tengu no Kakuremino, also known as Speculatrix Clandestina. This artifact is a tattered cloak that allows her to access a separate pocket dimension containing a traditional Japanese house, which she uses for advanced stealth, transporting allies, absorbing attacks, and strategic infiltration. In the epilogue, her training allows her to physically traverse space to instantly appear whenever a classmate is in danger, earning her the moniker of a dependable "Ninja of the Space Age."

Kaede's notable abilities are vast, all falling under her self-styled "Kaede ninpou" or Kaede ninja arts. She is an expert hand-to-hand combatant and weapon master, proficient with kunai and a giant shuriken. Her techniques include the Kage Bunshin to create multiple solid shadow clones, the high-speed movement technique Shukuchi and its long-range variant Shukuchi Mukyou, and powerful attacks like the Bakusa Bakuenjin, which ensnares an enemy in an explosive chain. She sometimes trains while blindfolded to heighten her other senses. Her primary asset in the latter half of the story is her pactio artifact, the Tengu no Kakuremino, which provides unparalleled tactical utility for stealth, defense, and transport.
