Description
Guiche de Gramont is a noble student at the Tristain Academy of Magic and the third son of General Gramont, coming from a prominent military family known for its long line of distinguished ancestors. As a second-year student, he is a dot-class mage who specializes in earth magic, which earns him the nickname Guiche the Brass, though this epithet is rarely used after the beginning of the story. He carries an artificial rose with him at all times, and the stem of this flower conceals his wand, which is an extension of his magical abilities. His familiar is a giant mole named Verdandi, a creature that reflects his earth elemental specialization and proves useful for digging tunnels and paths on various missions.

In terms of personality, Guiche initially presents himself as a suave, flirtatious, and vain playboy who carries himself with aristocratic conceit. He has a habit of courting multiple women simultaneously, often using the same romantic phrases regardless of who he is addressing. His primary romantic interest is a fellow student named Montmorency, whom he affectionately calls Monmon, but his persistent infidelity becomes a recurring pattern in his behavior. Despite loving Montmorency genuinely, he cannot resist flirting with other attractive women, including Princess Henrietta herself. Underneath this bravado, however, Guiche is something of a coward, often cowering in fear when faced with genuine danger, such as when Saito defeats him in a duel or when confronting Fouquet and her earth golem. He values his pride as a noble greatly and can become defensive when his honor is challenged.

Guiche's role in the story begins as that of a minor antagonist and rival to the protagonist Saito. Their conflict arises when Saito publicly exposes Guiche's two-timing behavior, revealing his simultaneous romantic involvement with Montmorency and another girl named Katie. Humiliated, Guiche challenges Saito to a duel. Initially, he gains the upper hand, using his earth magic to summon brass golems called Valkyries to pummel Saito. However, when Guiche arrogantly offers Saito a sword to make the duel more interesting, this act inadvertently awakens Saito's power as Gandalfr, allowing him to easily bisect Guiche's Valkyries and defeat him. Following this defeat, Guiche gradually develops into a more significant supporting character, eventually becoming one of Saito's closest friends and allies. As the story progresses, he joins the main party on various adventures, including the mission to Albion.

His relationship with Saito evolves considerably over time. What begins as adversarial rivalry, with Guiche looking down on Saito as a commoner, transforms into genuine friendship and mutual respect. Saito's willingness to stand up to him and his subsequent displays of courage change Guiche's perspective on commoners. He eventually comes to consider Saito a true friend, even offering that Saito could stay with his family if he ever had nowhere else to go. Guiche and Saito develop a camaraderie that includes shared perverted tendencies, though sources note that Guiche is arguably even more perverted than Saito. Their friendship solidifies further when they serve together in the military.

Guiche's relationship with Montmorency is central to his character. Although his infidelity causes significant conflict, and the two break up and reconcile multiple times, his affection for her remains steadfast throughout the series. He is willing to risk his life to protect her in dangerous situations, and genuine emotion surfaces between them, such as when Montmorency sheds tears of joy upon seeing Guiche return safely from the battlefield. Despite his lingering flirtatious habits, his commitment to Montmorency deepens as the story progresses.

One of the most significant aspects of Guiche's character is his development from a vain, cowardly noble into a capable military commander and leader. When the Albion invasion occurs, he is drafted into the army and, due to personnel shortages, unexpectedly elevated to a command position. Despite his initial incompetence, he humbly acknowledges his lack of experience and seeks help from seasoned non-commissioned officers, enabling his unit to achieve the feat of reaching within the enemy castle first. Later, Princess Henrietta commissions him to reform the Order of the Undine Knights, also known as the Ordine Knights of the Water Spirits Corps, appointing him as captain with Saito serving as his vice-captain. This knighthood is essentially formed for Saito, but since Saito is a commoner, Guiche nominally serves as the leader to maintain aristocratic sensibilities while Saito holds the actual authority. Through these experiences, Guiche develops anti-war tendencies, a natural reaction to witnessing the horrors of combat firsthand. He matures into a tactically competent leader who demonstrates genuine courage, such as when he refuses to flee from the golem Jormungand to protect Louise while Saito is absent.

In terms of notable abilities, Guiche specializes in earth magic at the dot level, though he progresses to line mage over time. His signature spell is Valkyrie Summoning, which allows him to summon brass or bronze golems shaped like valkyries, the female figures from Norse mythology who decide who lives and dies in battle. To activate this spell, Guiche drops a rose petal from his artificial rose wand, which causes a valkyrie soldier to emerge from the earth. These constructs can fight through hand-to-hand combat and are durable due to their metallic composition, though they can be destroyed by sufficient force. He can summon multiple Valkyries at once, typically up to six, to fight for him. His earth affinity also gives him skills in alchemy, and his familiar Verdandi, the giant mole, proves useful for digging and underground navigation. Despite not being an exceptionally powerful mage compared to some of his peers, Guiche's tactical thinking and willingness to acknowledge his limitations allow him to grow into an effective leader.

Guiche's name is derived from Armand de Gramont, Comte de Guiche, a historical French figure who lived during the seventeenth century and was also known for his playboy tendencies. His favorite food is soufflé. Over the course of the series, Guiche transforms from a comically arrogant noble to a reliable ally and commander, balancing his lingering flaws with demonstrated courage, loyalty, and leadership that make him an important member of the main cast.
