Description
Malicorne de Grandpré, sometimes spelled Malicorne de Grandple, is a supporting character in the anime The Familiar of Zero. He is a student at the Tristain Academy of Magic, where he belongs to the Undine Knights under the command of Guiche de Gramont. He is also later recognized as a Chevalier of Queen Henrietta. Malicorne is a portly, blonde-haired young man, noted for his stout build, which is attributed to a fondness for food. He typically keeps his eyes closed and dresses in the standard academy uniform with a cape.

His magical specialty is wind magic, and his familiar is an owl named Cubasil. He possesses a unique far vision spell that allows him to see distances of at least fifteen miles, a talent that proves useful in reconnaissance and during military campaigns. His own nickname for himself is Malicorne the Windward, though Louise mockingly refers to him as Malicorne the Resfriado in some adaptations.

Initially presented as a somewhat timid and unconfident noble, Malicorne experiences significant growth over the course of the story. Through his service in the Undine Knights and his interactions with Guiche and Saito Hiraga, he becomes disillusioned with the incompetence of his superiors and gradually gains greater self-assurance and independence. He is often portrayed as a comedic figure, but his loyalty and willingness to fight alongside his comrades are genuine.

Personality-wise, Malicorne is generally good-natured, albeit occasionally pompous about his noble status. He develops a romantic crush on Illococoo, the human form of Tabitha’s familiar Sylphid, only to be embarrassed when he learns that she is actually a dragon. This unrequited affection is a recurring source of mild humor. His motivations center on earning respect and proving his worth as both a mage and a knight, even if his methods sometimes lean toward the theatrical.

In the story, Malicorne serves as a minor but recurring ally to the main cast, particularly during conflicts involving the kingdom of Albion and later threats to Tristain. His relationship with Guiche is one of camaraderie, though he is subordinate to Guiche in the knights. He interacts frequently with Louise and Saito, often commenting on their antics or providing comic relief. As the series progresses, he matures and takes on more serious responsibilities, culminating in his knighthood. His development is subtle but consistent, moving from a background student to a reliable, if still somewhat clumsy, member of the royal forces. His abilities as a wind mage and his exceptional range of vision make him a valuable asset in reconnaissance and tactical support.
