Description
Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Valliè is the primary female protagonist of the story. She is the third daughter of the prestigious Vallière family, a noble house that controls the northeastern territory of Tristain. As a second-year student at the Tristain Academy of Magic, she has earned the unflattering nickname Louise the Zero because every spell she attempts ends in a violent explosion, and she appears to lack any elemental affinity. This apparent magical incompetence is later revealed to be the result of her being a rare and legendary Void mage, a practitioner of the lost fifth element of magic descended from the founder Brimir.

Her personality is marked by a sharp contrast between outward arrogance and deep-seated insecurity. She is proud of her noble lineage and demands to be treated with respect, often lashing out with a riding crop or explosive magic when she feels slighted. This temperament masks a profound vulnerability stemming from her inability to perform even basic magic, which has made her a target of ridicule from her peers. She possesses a strong sense of duty and responsibility, particularly toward Princess Henrietta, whose safety and well-being she considers her personal charge. Despite her irritable exterior, she is capable of great kindness and loyalty, especially toward those who earn her trust.

Her motivations evolve over the course of the story. Initially driven by a desire to prove herself as a competent mage and uphold her family’s honor, she gradually comes to value her relationships, particularly her bond with her familiar. She struggles with jealousy and possessiveness, especially regarding interactions between her familiar and other girls, but these feelings eventually mature into genuine love and selflessness.

Louise serves as the emotional and narrative anchor of the series. Her summoning of the human familiar Saito Hiraga from modern Tokyo sets the central conflict and relationship in motion. Her role expands from a struggling student to a key figure in the defense of Tristain, fighting against the Reconquista forces and later facing the ancient dragon. She becomes a priestess and is adopted as a sister by Queen Henrietta, placing her second in line to the throne.

Her key relationships define her growth. With Saito, her familiar, she begins by treating him as a slave but gradually falls in love with him, culminating in marriage at the end of the series. Her rivalry with the flamboyant fire mage Kirche stems from a long-standing family feud, but it also pushes Louise to confront her own insecurities. Her friendship with Princess Henrietta provides a source of support and underscores her sense of duty. Her classmate Tabitha, a quiet wind mage, becomes a trusted ally.

Throughout the series, Louise undergoes significant development. She transitions from a spoiled, insecure noble into a courageous and capable Void mage who can destroy armies with her signature spell Explosion. She learns to control her temper, express her feelings more openly, and put the needs of others before her own pride. One of her most poignant moments involves having her memories of Saito erased to protect him, only for him to restore them with a kiss. In the final episodes, she marries Saito and uses her World Door spell to travel to his world in Japan.

Her notable abilities center exclusively on Void magic. Her primary combat spell is Explosion, which creates a massive blast capable of leveling large areas, though it requires time to cast. She also masters World Door, a teleportation spell that can transport herself and others across dimensions. As a Void mage, she cannot use the four elemental magics, which is why her earlier attempts resulted in uncontrolled explosions. She is also a skilled horsewoman and enjoys knitting, though her skill in that hobby is notably poor.
