Description
Kuraudo Ooishi is a veteran detective working out of the Okinomiya Police Station, driven by a personal mission to unravel a string of mysterious deaths tied to an annual local festival. He is a muscular, somewhat elderly man with short grey hair and green eyes, rarely seen without a cigarette in hand. His typical work attire consists of a cream colored suit, a black collared shirt, a red tie, and red suspenders, though he often carries his jacket rather than wearing it in the summer heat. He has a watch on his left wrist and, in the anime adaptation, wears white shoes.
On the surface, Ooishi comes across as light hearted, playful, and even a little shady. He is devoted to his case and initially presents himself as a reliable ally, especially to younger people like Keiichi Maebara. Underneath that, however, is a fiercely persistent investigator who can become intimidating and is willing to use violence or manipulative tactics when he feels it necessary. His determination borders on obsession, and this single mindedness sometimes leads him to act selfishly, such as when he attempts to exploit someone’s well being for investigative gain. He is also known for his unorthodox methods, which make him a nuisance in the eyes of the villagers.
Ooishi’s motivations are deeply personal. He was born and raised in Okinomiya. His biological father was killed during World War II when the factory where he worked was bombed. In the post war years, during a severe food shortage, he was made to pursue black market buyers, an assignment he took no pride in. During that time he met an older man who became like a second father to him. That man was the manager of a dam construction project, and after a violent altercation with his own employees, he was lynched and dismembered. Ooishi came to regard this murder as the first of the annual curse related deaths, and he has spent the five years leading up to the events of the story trying to prove that the powerful Sonozaki family is behind the killings. His relentless investigation is fueled by the loss of that father figure and a sense of duty to expose what he sees as a village wide conspiracy.
In the story, Ooishi serves as a key outsider figure who digs into the dark secrets of Hinamizawa. His role is complicated: he genuinely wants to uncover the truth and protect the innocent, but his combative approach and deep seated suspicions make him an antagonistic force for many residents. He is hated by most of the village, in particular by Mion Sonozaki, who believes in her family’s innocence. Ironically, the villagers in turn suspect Ooishi himself of being involved, because he has been in contact with each victim shortly before their death, leading some to call him Oyashiro-sama’s servant. Across different arcs, Ooishi approaches one of the main characters to act as an informant, and his probing questions and insinuations sometimes inadvertently feed paranoia and hasten disaster.
Ooishi’s key relationships further shape his arc. His closest friend is another detective, Mamoru Akasaka, with whom he shares a long standing bond. After Ooishi retires and moves with his elderly mother to Hokkaido, fulfilling her wish to return to her hometown, he and Akasaka remain determined to find the truth behind the great tragedy that befalls Hinamizawa. Together they compile all known events into a book titled “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni,” aiming to preserve the memory of what happened and keep the hope of someday solving the case alive. In certain timelines, when the influence of a larger, outside force affects the village, Ooishi’s suspicion of the Sonozaki family wavers, showing a capacity for change under the right circumstances.
Despite his age, Ooishi is physically capable. He is skilled in wrestling and hand to hand combat, though he admits to having never fired a gun in the line of duty. His hobbies include playing mahjongg, a game he often enjoys with Keiichi, and ballroom dancing, which he takes up after retirement to stay fit. He is a chain smoker who favors a cigarette brand called Gaster. His given name, Kuraudo, can be read phonetically as “cloud,” which gives him his occasional nickname. Throughout all the storylines he appears in, Ooishi remains defined by an unyielding will to pursue the truth, a blend of charm and menace, and a tragic personal stake that colors everything he does.
