Reggie is Paul's older brother living in Sinnoh's Veilstone City. He works as a Pokémon Breeder, a profession he pursued after retiring as a Pokémon Trainer. Before this shift, Reggie was a successful Trainer, earning all eight Gym Badges from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh regions and securing six of the seven Frontier Symbols during the Kanto Battle Frontier challenge—only missing the Brave Symbol. This career change followed a significant defeat against Pyramid King Brandon. Reggie failed to defeat any of Brandon's Pokémon in their battle, leading Brandon to criticize him for lacking a unique battle strategy and true inner strength. This loss deeply affected Reggie, prompting him to reevaluate his path and abandon competitive training to focus on breeding and caring for Pokémon. Reggie's personality contrasts with Paul's; he exhibits a calm, optimistic demeanor and values kindness and encouragement in training. Despite Paul's disapproval of Reggie's career change and occasional harshness, Reggie remains supportive. He assists Paul by caring for his reserve Pokémon—Electabuzz, Ursaring, Weavile, Honchkrow, Torterra, Ninjask, Gliscor, and Magmortar—when Paul needs space on his active team. Reggie also aids other Trainers, notably helping Ash's Staravia learn Brave Bird through demonstrations with his own Staraptor. Despite retirement, Reggie remains a formidable battler. His known Pokémon include Bibarel, Swalot, Staraptor, and Drapion. In a three-on-three battle against Ash, his Swalot defeated Ash's Staravia, though Bibarel and Staraptor lost to Ash's Turtwig and Pikachu. Drapion was used in his battle against Brandon but was easily defeated by Brandon's Regirock. Reggie plays a pivotal role in mediating the Ash and Paul rivalry. After witnessing Paul's loss to Brandon, he proposed a full battle between Ash and Paul at Lake Acuity to help them gauge each other's growth. He arranged for battle judge Olivier to oversee the match and observed closely. Though work prevented him from attending the Lily of the Valley Conference, he watched Paul's matches remotely. After Paul's loss to Ash, Reggie reassured Paul's Pokémon, emphasizing the experience had strengthened Paul. Later, Reggie appears with Paul watching televised broadcasts of the Masters Eight Tournament matches, including Cynthia versus Iris and Ash versus Steven. His name, Reggie (Reiji in Japanese), evokes "Regi," a subtle reference to Brandon's Legendary Titan Pokémon, symbolically influencing both Reggie and Paul's journeys.
