Description
Naruko Anjō, nicknamed Anaru, is a central member of the childhood friend group Super Peace Busters. She possesses a slim build and stands approximately 164–165 cm (5'4"–5'5") tall. In childhood, she had brown hair and wore dark grey-framed glasses. As a teenager, her hair is orange, styled in mid-length wavy pigtails secured by star-shaped accessories, with bangs framing the left side of her face. Her typical attire includes a school uniform: a white collared shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a red bow, a dark magenta skirt, a dark red belt with a gold buckle, dark blue mid-calf socks, and brown shoes. A light pink hair tie bracelet often adorns her left wrist.

Her personality shows contradictions and internal conflict. Publicly, especially around school peers, she displays a cold or dismissive attitude toward Jinta "Jintan" Yadomi, masking her genuine concern for him. This stems from being easily influenced by others; she frequently adopts her current friend group's opinions or actions even when privately disagreeing. Chiriko "Tsuruko" Tsurumi notes this susceptibility to peer pressure has persisted since childhood. Despite socializing with classmates Chiriko disapproves of, Naruko maintains deep underlying care for her childhood friends. Actions revealing this loyalty include regularly delivering homework to Jintan during his prolonged school absence and meticulously preparing (like painting her nails) before visiting him. She harbors significant guilt and unresolved emotions regarding Meiko "Menma" Honma's death, believing a question she posed about Jintan's feelings for Menma inadvertently contributed to the accident.

Her background and development are deeply tied to relationships. She idolized Menma as a child but simultaneously envied her, particularly Menma's physical appearance and close bond with Jintan. This jealousy led her to privately wish for Menma's absence, hoping to grow closer to Jintan herself. However, after Menma's death, Naruko's relationship with Jintan deteriorated instead of strengthening. In the present timeline, she works part-time at a video game store, aligning with her personal interests as she owns an extensive manga and video game collection. This hobby facilitates her reconnection with Jintan and Tetsudō "Poppo" Hisakawa. Lingering romantic feelings for Jintan remain a central struggle; she confesses to him, though their relationship stays complicated by his focus on Menma's ghost.

Her development extends beyond the main series. In the film *Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day - Letter to Menma*, set one year later, Naruko and the Super Peace Busters write letters to Menma. Naruko initially struggles to articulate her thoughts, reflecting her ongoing emotional journey. By this time, she begins accepting her feelings for Jintan and contemplates expressing them more openly. A decade later, during the "10 Years After" stage drama, she works alongside Tetsudō at a company they co-founded. Her romantic relationship with Jintan progresses significantly: he proposes marriage during a conversation she overhears, leading to her flustered but affirmative response, confirming their commitment. Her interests remain consistent, continuing to collect games and manga.

The etymology of her name reflects identity aspects: "Naruko" combines "ringing" (naru) and "child" (ko), while "Anjou" derives from "cheap" (an) and "castle" (jou). This background and her evolution from conflicted teenager to adult reconciling her past and embracing her future encapsulate her narrative across official continuations.
