Description
Kenzo Hyodo first appears in the anime Battle Spirits: Shōnen Gekiha Dan as a nine-year-old card battler from Earth. He has blue-green hair and matching eyes, and his initial outfit consists of a yellow headband decorated with ladybugs, a green and white shirt, plaid shorts, and long yellow socks. When he enters a battle trance, his form takes on the appearance of a yellow horned skull. In the sequel series, Battle Spirits Brave, which takes place two years later, his appearance changes. The eleven-year-old Kenzo now wears a red and yellow shirt, blue shorts, and a white lab coat. He has also traded his ladybug headband for a necklace featuring a ladybug and now wears a pair of glasses similar to those worn by a character from the first series.
Kenzo is a prodigy with a genius-level intellect, something that is evident from his strategic thinking both as a battler and later as a scientist. He often acts mature for his age and possesses a great deal of confidence in his abilities. However, he also has a distinct childish side, which manifests as impatience, a tendency to be easily frightened compared to his comrades, and a quick temper when provoked. When he loses a match, he is prone to throwing a tantrum. His initial motivation for battling is a selfish one; he enters the Grand Rolo Championship with the wish to become an invincible card battler. This puts him at odds with the protagonist, Dan Bashin, who fights for more altruistic reasons. As the story progresses, he reluctantly joins the group of chosen card battlers and begins to develop a sense of camaraderie and responsibility towards his allies.
In the narrative, Kenzo is revealed to be the true bearer of the green core's light, a fact that becomes apparent when Kajitsu Momose, who was initially thought to hold the green symbol, is shown to contain all the colors. He first appears during the Grand Rolo Championship, where he defeats a possessed opponent and advances to the final round against Dan. After losing the final match, he is invited by Dan to join the group on their mission. Throughout the journey, Kenzo uses his strategic mind to aid the team, such as suggesting a trip to the green world to help recover Kajitsu's health. He faces defeat against an opponent named Leon, who uses a multi-color deck, a tactic Kenzo had not anticipated. Later, he collaborates with another character, Mai, to implant a virus that temporarily shuts down power systems. In the final battle against the primary antagonist, Kenzo lends his most powerful card, The BladeKingBeast Byak-Garo, to Dan.
By the time of Battle Spirits Brave, Kenzo has largely stepped back from regular card battles to focus on his work as a scientist in the future. He researches the Otherworld Observation Records and uncovers the legend of the 12 Zodiac X-rares, which are the key to preventing a catastrophic reset of the Earth. While he is less active as a battler, he proves his skills have not diminished when he easily defeats a challenger, Plym, using three copies of his signature card. He also assists in a crucial scientific discovery by analyzing the DNA of a mazoku, Barone, and finding that they are genetically identical to humans. Working alongside a colleague, Stella Korabelishchikov, Kenzo helps locate an arctic shrine needed to activate the Zodiac X-rares power.
Kenzo's key relationships evolve over the course of both series. He often finds himself annoyed by characters who cannot remember his name, such as Magisa in the first series and Stella in Brave, leading him to frequently correct them. His relationship with Dan begins with rivalry, as Kenzo is determined to beat him, but it grows into a solid friendship and mutual respect after his defeat. He shows genuine concern for Kajitsu, taking initiative to help her recover, and he shares a cooperative dynamic with Mai, working together on technical tasks like implanting the virus. In Brave, he develops a unique bond with Plym, who falls in love with him after he defeats her in a match; he responds to her affection in a playful, albeit somewhat aloof, manner.
Throughout his journey, Kenzo undergoes significant character development. He starts as a confident but somewhat selfish child whose primary desire is personal invincibility. After his loss to Dan, he begins to open up to others and understand the value of teamwork and selflessness. He faces fear and hesitation, particularly when the mission to destroy the Grand Cores is revealed to come at a potential personal cost, but he ultimately chooses to participate for the greater good. By the Brave series, he has matured into a focused and dedicated scientist, channeling his genius intellect into research aimed at saving the world rather than achieving personal glory in battle. In the epilogue, he returns to his own time with his friends, expressing a readiness to face the past.
As a card battler, Kenzo specializes in a green deck, which is known for its speed and efficiency. His signature and most notable ability is his use of the X-rare spirit, The BladeKingBeast Byak-Garo. In Brave, he has acquired three copies of this card, demonstrating his dedication to his core strategy. Other key cards in his repertoire include the spirit Amenborg and the magic Thorn Prison. His preferred color is green, and he is proficient enough to have a history of tournament wins at a very young age.
