Description
Tatta, born into the Pariah caste beneath even the Shudra slaves in ancient India's hierarchy, survives through thievery, stealing from caravans. He possesses the unique childhood-discovered ability to enter and control animal minds. His life shatters when Kosalan soldiers murder his family, igniting a deep hatred for Kosala. He bonds closely with Chapra, a Shudra slave, and Chapra's mother, who cares for both boys. After Kosala executes Chapra and his mother for deceiving the nobility about Chapra's caste, Tatta vows vengeance.
As an adult, Tatta leads a bandit group, directing his rage into violence and theft. He deliberately exposes the sheltered Prince Siddhartha Gautama to suffering outside the palace, hoping the future ruler would destroy Kosala. Though initially rejecting monastic life, Tatta later becomes a lay disciple following Siddhartha's enlightenment as the Buddha. He struggles profoundly to reconcile Buddha's teachings of non-violence and forgiveness with his personal trauma and enduring desire for revenge against Kosala. This conflict causes him to leave the path of discipleship. He joins a renegade Shakyan army seeking retribution for atrocities committed by Kosala's Prince Virudhaka (Crystal Prince), meeting his death fighting Kosalan forces.
Tatta is a fictional character created by Osamu Tezuka, absent from Buddhist scriptures or historical accounts, whose story explores caste oppression, loss, the cycle of violence, and the struggle to transcend suffering through spirituality.
