Kou Minamoto is a third-year middle school student at Kamome Academy and the second son of the famed Minamoto exorcist clan. Initially idolizing his older brother Teru, Kou aspired to become an exorcist himself. Tasked by Teru with exorcising the Seven Wonders, Kou failed to exorcise Hanako due to insufficient spiritual power. Witnessing Hanako's actions led Kou to question his family's doctrine that all supernaturals are evil. He refused to exorcise Hanako, vowing to understand supernaturals before judging them, marking a decisive break from his brother's ideology.
He wields the raiteijou, a spirit staff that transforms spiritual energy into exorcising lightning, typically disguised as a black umbrella. Hanako sealed its full power, limiting Kou's effectiveness. As a clan member, he naturally sees and interacts with supernaturals without summoning them. His inexperience often results in accidental self-electrocution with the staff.
Kou possesses spiky blond hair, light blue eyes, and protruding canine teeth. He wears Kamome Academy's teal middle school uniform with a black undershirt, a cream-and-brown striped tie, and a red sweatband on his right wrist. A distinctive red traffic-safety omamori pierces his right ear, bearing the kanji for "traffic" (交通), homophonous with his name. During the Three Clock Keepers arc, Mirai's powers aged him into an adult form resembling Teru, aligning with Nene Yashiro's romantic preferences.
Energetic, impulsive, and occasionally rude, Kou consciously strives for politeness. He rushes into situations without forethought but matures over time. He possesses a strong sense of justice and loyalty, protecting friends regardless of danger. Kou openly acknowledges deep affection for Nene Yashiro, Hanako, and his family, prioritizing Nene's happiness with Hanako over his own feelings. Guilt over neglecting classmate Mitsuba Sousuke, killed in a car accident, drove Kou to help Mitsuba pass on peacefully. When Tsukasa forcibly transformed Mitsuba into a violent supernatural, Kou witnessed Hanako destroy him, fueling Kou's resolve to grow stronger and combat evil supernaturals like Tsukasa.
Kou handles all household chores and cooking for his family, demonstrating exceptional skill in both. He meticulously peels oranges cleanly. His favorite snack is sweet potato jellies, and he expresses a romantic preference for individuals with cute smiles. He becomes alert during thunderstorms and senses impending danger in snowy conditions, though he tolerates cold well. Under extreme stress, he habitually squishes nearby supernaturals like Mokkes.
His surname originally appeared as "Adashino" in the series pilot. Alphabetically, "Minamoto" precedes "Mitsuba" in class rosters, reflecting their junior high proximity.
