Description
Chise Hatori is a Japanese teenager with fair skin, red hair ranging from chin-length to shoulder-length, and green eyes. She typically wears an oversized green hooded coat over a red sweater vest and white buttoned shirt, a dark-green skirt, and brown boots. A necklace with an Elias Ainsworth-gifted adder stone allows her to see through glamours, and an Angelica Barley-crafted ring on her right index finger regulates her magic absorption. Curses temporarily transformed her left arm into a wood-like appearance, kept bandaged, and replaced her left eye with one from Cartaphilus; this eye later matched her natural color after resolving internal curses. These changes stemmed from absorbing a dragon's curse and the Cartaphilus eye transplant, inadvertently granting her immortality and altering her initially limited lifespan.

Born with "The Sight" enabling perception of supernatural entities, Chise is a rare Sleigh Beggy who passively absorbs vast ambient magical energy. This strains her body, shortening her lifespan and attracting benevolent and malevolent entities. Her early life involved familial instability: her father, Yuuki Hatori, abandoned the family, taking her younger brother Fumiki; her mother, Chika Hatori, later attempted to strangle Chise before committing suicide. Subsequently passed among reluctant relatives, enduring bullying, Chise fell into severe depression. Contemplating suicide, an unnamed man persuaded her to sell herself at an auction. Elias Ainsworth purchased her there for five million pounds, offering roles as his apprentice and future bride.

Initially, Chise exhibited a meek, subservient personality with low self-esteem, viewing herself as a burden and showing little concern for her well-being. She accepted Elias's initial experimental treatment due to gratitude for his acceptance. Her early actions reflected minimal self-preservation, often prioritizing others' safety at great personal risk, like shielding Alice from a monster. She struggled with socialization, naivety, and a fear of thunderstorms, likely from past isolation. Mentorship from figures like Lindel and the dragon Nevin encouraged her to value herself more. Nevin specifically challenged her self-deprecating mindset, highlighting how it undermined her positive impact.

Her character evolved through key experiences. In Ulthar, she purified a blight caused by Joseph's experiments, choosing to redeem the cursed couple within rather than destroy them. During wand-making at the Dragon Aerie, she confronted Elias about his past and reaffirmed their bond, later crafting her wand from Nevin's branch. Overcoming doubts about Elias discarding her involved Nevin's posthumous encouragement. Her decision to attend the College of Magic marked a pivotal development, seeking alternatives to self-sacrifice to help others with similar struggles. Conflict arose when Elias attempted to sacrifice her friend Stella to remove her dragon curse, leading Chise to physically retaliate and flee. Reconciliation followed, with Elias supporting her college investigations, such as confronting Philomela Sargant.

Chise's abilities extend beyond her Sleigh Beggy nature. She demonstrates proficiency in purification magic, flight, potion-making, and sleep-inducing songs, though spellcasting strains her body. She unconsciously enters others' minds and memories, as seen with Ruth and Cartaphilus. Using an Ashen Eyes pelt, she performs skinwalking—transforming into animals like bears or wolves—a skill unrelated to Navajo traditions but linked to Nordic Ulfhendar myths. The dragon's curse enhanced her physical strength and sense of smell, while Cartaphilus's eye granted immortality, though she retains some control.

Her relationships center on loyalty and empathy. She remains devoted to Elias despite his emotional incomprehension and occasional betrayals, rejecting offers to leave him. She forged bonds with her familiar Ruth, whom she views as a brother; the household spirit Silky; and friends like Alice Swayne and Stella Barklem. Even adversarial figures, such as Cartaphilus, receive her empathy, demonstrating her core trait of seeking to alleviate others' suffering. This drive, rooted in her traumatic past, gradually shifted from self-destructive sacrifice toward a more balanced approach focused on sustainable solutions.
