TV-Series
Description
Ayane Kijima is a veteran magical girl and the de facto leader of the Shining Star, an elite team of magical girls who operate directly under the orders of the Chief Sorceress. She is a senior to Sasami Iwakura and her friends, both as a fellow student at their school and as a more experienced magical girl. Ayane has an androgynous appearance and wears a magical girl outfit consisting of a black dress and a non-pointed hat, a design that closely resembles a stereotypical witch and contrasts with the more colorful costumes worn by other magical girls.

Her background before joining the witches' side is largely unknown. Unlike Sasami and her friends, Ayane became disillusioned with humanity and willingly chose to ally herself with the witches, developing a fierce loyalty to the Chief Sorceress. She lives in the same city as the main characters and attends the same high school, suggesting she is likely between 15 and 18 years old.

Ayane is characterized by her stoic and mature demeanor. She is a natural-born leader, hardworking, and completely dedicated to reaching her full potential. Even after losing a significant title, she remains a role model and mentor to the other magical girls who look up to her. Her personality balances kindness with sternness; she is not prone to resentment or envy, and she is eager to help others improve even if they surpass her.

Ayane was the favorite to become the Maiden of the Dawn, a highly prestigious title, before losing it to Misao Shinohara. Despite this defeat, she took a great personal interest in Misao. She gave the younger girl advice and encouraged her to push her limits, hoping Misao would become her rival. When Misao broke her winning streak and claimed the title, Ayane advised her to be strong, dignified, and confident in her new role, showing pride in how much Misao had grown. In turn, Misao looks up to Ayane as a respected mentor.

As a magical girl, Ayane is considered one of the most powerful in the series. Like all magical girls in this world, she was born with the natural ability to use magic without needing to transform or use magical trinkets. She is a prodigy and a master magic duelist, having achieved a winning streak of 69 consecutive victories before it was broken by Misao. Her skill level far exceeds that of Sasami's group, and she is able to deflect their spells with ease. Her magical specialties include transmutation, as she can turn mundane objects into weapons like whips and binding ropes that she controls with her mind. She also demonstrates mastery of darkness-based magic. In addition, Ayane has knowledge of enchanted objects, creating a magic invitation capable of summoning and teleporting people, and she can bewitch objects, such as turning a playground into a flying ship.

Throughout the story, Ayane serves as a significant figure who bridges the gap between the witches and the younger magical girls. Although her mission from the Chief Sorceress involved getting to Sasami, her personal focus was always more invested in Misao. Her development culminates in the series finale, where she abandons her vendetta against humanity following the Chief Sorceress's final defeat. By the end, she and the other members of the Shining Star are seen peacefully near Sasami's friends, signaling her reintegration and a departure from her former antagonistic role.
