Ayane Kijima is a veteran magical girl and the de facto leader of the Shining Star, an elite team of magical girls who operate directly under the orders of the Chief Sorceress. She is a senior to Sasami Iwakura and her friends, both as a fellow student at their school and as a more experienced magical girl. Ayane has an androgynous appearance and wears a magical girl outfit consisting of a black dress and a non-pointed hat, a design that closely resembles a stereotypical witch and contrasts with the more colorful costumes worn by other magical girls.
Her background before joining the witches' side is largely unknown. Unlike Sasami and her friends, Ayane became disillusioned with humanity and willingly chose to ally herself with the witches, developing a fierce loyalty to the Chief Sorceress.
