Lingshen Chao, also romanized as Chao Rinshen, appears as a brilliant student in Mahora Academy's Class 2/3-A. She excels academically and athletically, actively contributing to multiple research clubs: Quantum Mechanics, Robotics Engineering, Eastern Medical Science, Cookery, Martial Arts, and Biological Engineering. Her technical skills drive campus advancements, notably aiding in the creation of the robot student Chachamaru Karakuri to assist Evangeline McDowell.
She prominently operates "Chao Bao Zi," a profitable mobile food stall selling Chinese nikuman dumplings, with classmates Satsuki Yotsuba, Satomi Hakase, Chachamaru, and Ku Fei. Her cheerful, food-obsessed exterior conceals a complex background and hidden purpose.
Chao originates from a Martian colony in 2163, born to genetically engineered parents seeking revenge against Earth's mage societies. Adopted by the affluent Martian Lingshen family, her genius-level intellect emerged early, secretly designing advanced UNSC military technology like miniaturized Magnetic Accelerator Cannons and the Spartan Laser. Discovering magic and tracing her lineage to Negi Springfield motivated her to alter history through time travel.
Using the device Cassiopeia, Chao traveled to 1997, sustaining injuries that required recovery in MolMol. There, she provided UNSC schematics to the government before proceeding to 2005 Japan. Enrolling at Mahora Academy under a fabricated birthdate (December 1, 1988), she prepared to expose magic globally during the Mahora Festival, believing this would prevent future conflicts and the collapse of Mundus Magicus.
Her plan exploited the World Tree's power during the festival to cast "Forced Recognition Magic," overcoming human skepticism. She orchestrated events meticulously: sponsoring a martial arts tournament, leaking Negi’s search for his father to elevate his profile, gifting Negi a modified Cassiopeia watch enabling limited time travel, and deploying a robot army to control Mahora and eleven global locations. She imprisoned investigators like Takahata and neutralized opponents including Setsuna Sakurazaki and Asuna Kagurazaki using a futuristic battlesuit and time-manipulation tactics.
Confronted by Negi Springfield, she revealed her claimed ancestry to him and the Thousand Master (Nagi Springfield), alongside her fire-elemental magic derived from a body-engraved spell pattern. This magic inflicted severe physical strain, risking bodily collapse, but she deemed the sacrifice necessary. Negi’s question about her attachment to classmates caused hesitation, acknowledging their bonds as an unforeseen factor.
Defeated, Chao altered her spell to grant "one day of peace without hatred or sadness worldwide" instead of exposing magic. In a final act, she attempted to save the falling Negi before departing for her era using Cassiopeia.
Later, within the "UQ Holder!" sequel continuity, Chao returned alongside an alternate-timeline Evangeline to aid in restoring Asuna Kagurazaki to her proper time. Her character embodies contradictions: a self-proclaimed enthusiast of world domination who abhors war and dictatorship, a ruthless strategist who minimizes collateral damage, and a time traveler whose calculated mission was disrupted by authentic human connections.
