Description
Count Brocken stands as a major antagonist throughout the Mazinger Z franchise, appearing across various media with distinct backgrounds. His origin diverges between continuities. In Gosaku Ota's manga, Brocken was a Nazi Waffen-SS officer whose wartime atrocities were concealed by Dr. Hell. Critically injured on a mission, Dr. Hell revived him but failed to reattach his head, leaving it permanently detached. This manga version presents a darker, Lovecraft-inspired narrative where Brocken's severed head requires a nourishing bath for survival. The anime adaptation offers a sanitized origin: Brocken died in a car accident that severed his head, leading Dr. Hell to reconstruct him as a cyborg.

Brocken's appearance remains consistent: a disembodied head featuring a monocle and sharper canines, typically carried under his arm or floating independently. His body is fully mechanical, with exposed circuitry visible when damaged. He wears militaristic attire reflecting his Nazi background in the manga, including a Sam Browne belt and Iron Cross insignia.

Initially fiercely loyal to Dr. Hell, Brocken's personality evolves significantly. He exhibits pride and strategic competence from his soldiering past, but repeated defeats by Mazinger Z and harsh punishments erode his loyalty. He develops a bitter rivalry with fellow lieutenant Baron Ashura, frequently sabotaging each other's plans. Despite this animosity, Brocken later prevents the Iron Cross Corps from assassinating Ashura and mourns his death, showing respect. His disillusionment culminates in a vow to sever ties with Dr. Hell after the final battle, though he dies before fulfilling this.

Brocken's abilities encompass military strategy from his Nazi service and cybernetic enhancements enabling head-body separation. He commands the Iron Cross Corps air division and pilots Mechanical Beasts like Blogun G3, occasionally seizing direct control of Mazinger Z.

His narrative arc begins as reinforcement following Ashura's failures. Despite occasional successes—such as procuring Super Alloy Z—his plans are frequently thwarted by Ashura's interference or Mazinger Z. He perishes alongside Dr. Hell during their escape in Mazinger Z's finale when their shuttle is destroyed. Alternate media portrayals include Shin Mazinger Shogeki! Z Hen, where he reappears with similar traits but dies early from Mazinger Z's "Big Bang Punch"; a comedic, perverted version in the parody OVA *CB Go Nagai World*; and an incarnation with an attached head in *Mazinger Angels*. International releases renamed him "Count Decapito" (Tranzor Z) or "Conde Decapitado" (Latin America) due to his detached head.
