Description
Juzo Kabuto is the creator of Mazinger Z and grandfather of Koji and Shiro Kabuto. His character varies significantly across different iterations of the franchise.
In the original manga and TV anime, Juzo is a renowned scientist who discovered Japanium beneath Mount Fuji and used it to create Super Alloy Z. During an expedition on Bardos Island, he uncovered the ancient Mycene Empire's Mechanical Beasts. After Dr. Hell betrayed and murdered the team to seize the Beasts, Juzo escaped, dedicating himself to building Mazinger Z as a countermeasure. He saved his son Kenzo by converting him into a cyborg following an accident that killed Kenzo's wife. Juzo later raised Koji and Shiro after their parents' deaths. Shortly after completing Mazinger Z, Baron Ashura mortally wounded him. With his dying breath, he entrusted the robot to Koji and revealed Dr. Hell's plans for world domination. The TV anime portrays him as calmer and more family-oriented, showing trust and care for Koji despite growing mental strain from his work.
The *Mazinkaiser* OVA depicts Juzo surviving the assassination attempt without Koji's knowledge. He continues working in a secret underground laboratory, developing the more powerful Mazinkaiser. This version shows him as a strategic survivor actively combating greater threats behind the scenes.
The *Shin Mazinger ZERO* manga presents a darker iteration. Juzo becomes obsessed with perfecting Mazinger Z across multiple timelines. Frustrated by his old age, he uses photonic energy and Minerva X to send information back in time. This fractures his sanity with each timeline, driving him to commit extreme acts like killing Kenzo and Sayaka Yumi to test Koji's worthiness. In one timeline, Mazinger Z gains sentience, rebels, and transforms into the planet-destroying Mazinger ZERO, which Juzo ironically views as his ultimate achievement.
In *Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!*, Juzo collaborates with Dr. Hell on Bardos Island but opposes him upon discovering the dangers of the alien Kedora entity. He survives longer, playing an active early role against Dr. Hell, deploying Mazinger Z and revealing hidden truths about Kenzo's corruption and apparent death. This version emphasizes his foundational role against the Mycene Empire, with ties to characters like Tsubasa Nishikiori.
Across all media, Juzo is characterized by his brilliance in robotics and energy research, particularly regarding Japanium and Photonic Energy. His legacy centers on creating Mazinger Z to grant humanity "the power of a god or devil." His personality ranges from altruistic protector to megalomaniacal scientist, often influenced by psychological deterioration from repeated timelines or exposure to ancient evils. His physical appearance typically includes a scar over his left eye, aged features, and occasionally robotic tentacles in darker iterations.
