TV-Series
Description
Viscount Pygman serves as a lieutenant under Dr. Hell, with origins differing across adaptations. One continuity depicts him as a once-powerful shaman who mastered control over nature before his body deteriorated; Dr. Hell and Tsubasa Nishikiori revived him, granting a new body and implanting a neural block against betrayal. Another portrayal identifies him as a member of the Maasai people, characterized by a large muscular body bearing tribal markings and a pygmy-sized upper body serving as his head.

His appearance diverges significantly. Throughout much of the original series, he assumes the form of Jim Mazinger—a tall man with an African physique, curly black hair, and a suit. He later blinds himself in this guise to circumvent the neural block preventing him from identifying Tsubasa. His true form emerges as a pale-skinned, pygmy-sized figure with magenta hair, clad in black armbands, wrist bands, and briefs. In an alternate TV version, his body features a Maasai physique adorned with green bands and yellow rings, wearing a loincloth with suspenders.

Personality traits emphasize loyalty to Dr. Hell, though nuances exist. He shows respect toward fellow lieutenants like Baron Ashura, offering comfort after failures and assisting in confrontations. However, other media describe him as "wild," preferring solitary missions over collaboration and occasionally acting without Dr. Hell's authorization. He exhibits cruelty and brutality toward enemies, employing manipulation and psychological torture. His speech alternates between a weak tone during magic use or distinctive laughter ("Keekekekekekeke") and a loud, regular conversational voice.

Abilities encompass physical combat and mystical powers. In his Jim Mazinger guise, he displays heightened senses, fighting effectively even while blinded, and possesses significant strength capable of lifting humans single-handedly. His voodoo-based powers include conjuring illusions, inducing sickness or hallucinations, levitating with spectral wings, controlling wildlife, and halting projectiles. The TV version adds elemental manipulation—summoning fire, breathing flames, generating wind gusts via his shield—and teleportation. He wields a spear and shield in combat and can separate his upper and lower bodies, each moving autonomously.

His narrative role unfolds differently. In the original series, he first aids Baron Ashura by diverting missiles, later participating in assaults on the Photon Power Laboratory. He infiltrates using illusions, such as disguising himself as Ashura to interrogate Tsubasa, and commands Mechanical Beasts during sieges. His defeat comes when Inspector Ankokuji and Gamia Q3 douse him with a decomposing chemical, reverting him to his true form before Blade kills him. In the TV continuity, he appears later, stealing the Glory R2 Mechanical Beast without authorization to attack the laboratory, only to be destroyed by Mazinger Z's Koshiryoku Beam. The Shin Mazinger reboot positions him among Dr. Hell's key subordinates during the conflict over Photon Power.
