Description
Tohru Taki is a human character, initially appearing as a quiet and mysterious classmate of Takashi Natsume. She possesses short, dusty blonde hair, light brown eyes, and stands 160 cm tall. Born on May 15, she is 15 years old during most of the series. Taki belongs to a wealthy, ancient family descended from onmyoji practitioners. Her parents, frequently working overseas, were largely absent during her upbringing. Her family consists of her older brother Isamu (six years her senior), and her grandfather Shin'ichiro Taki, who primarily raised her. She shared a close bond with her grandfather, who nurtured her interest in youkai folklore, while her brother grew distant due to differing interests. After her grandfather's death when she was approximately 10, she chose to remain alone in the family home rather than accompany her parents abroad.

Around age 15, Taki discovered a youkai-summoning circle in her grandfather's notes. Drawing this intricate circle allowed humans to temporarily see any youkai entering it. Her experimentation resulted in a curse from a powerful youkai, preventing her from speaking to avoid harming others by inadvertently causing the youkai to consume the names of those she addressed. This curse forced her into isolation, making her seem introverted and unapproachable at school. The curse was later broken when Natsume and Nyanko-sensei sealed the responsible youkai, restoring Taki's natural personality.

Taki is typically cheerful, optimistic, and extroverted. She displays strong determination and resourcefulness, persistently attempting to confront youkai despite her inability to see them. Her enthusiasm for youkai topics often makes her talkative and excitable, though she can be unintentionally blunt or insensitive. She exhibits a unique aesthetic sense, notably finding Nyanko-sensei's cat form irresistibly cute and frequently hugging him despite his protests. She struggles with artistic activities, described as lacking delicacy in such tasks. Her personality has been analyzed as INFJ (Myers-Briggs), reflecting empathy, strong morals, and occasional indecisiveness, and Enneagram Type 6w5, highlighting loyalty, anxiety in perilous situations, and a need for security.

Taki's primary ability involves drawing specialized youkai circles inherited from her grandfather. These circles enable humans to see youkai within their radius, requiring no innate spiritual energy—only precision in replication, which she masters. She later studies her grandfather's onmyoji research to expand her knowledge of protective seals and spells, aiming to support Natsume more effectively despite his reluctance to involve her in dangers.

Her relationships center on friendships with Natsume and Kaname Tanuma, both aware of her knowledge of youkai. She met Natsume during her cursed period; their collaboration in breaking the curse solidified their trust. She befriended Tanuma through shared concern for Natsume, occasionally assisting each other. She adores Nyanko-sensei for freeing her from the curse, though he tolerates her affection grudgingly. Her relationship with her brother Isamu is initially distant, but they reconcile when he visits later. Isamu reveals they hid decorated river stones as a childhood gift for her, symbolizing renewed bonds. She maintains a detached but nonresentful connection with her absent parents and briefly interacts with other characters like exorcist Seiji Matoba.

Taki's development includes growing confidence in assisting Natsume with youkai matters, deepening her study of onmyoji traditions, and gradually overcoming lingering fear of curses. Her reconciliation with Isamu marks significant personal growth, as does her effort to balance curiosity about the supernatural world with concern for her friends' safety.
