Description
Atoru is a pivotal character in Ayakashi Ayashi, distinguished by her origins as a foreigner in the closed nation of Edo-period Japan. She is a young Aztec girl, originally from a region that is now Texas but was then part of northern Mexico. Orphaned after her family perished, she found herself alone and desperate. In her moment of greatest need, she prayed to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, an act that summoned a powerful Yoi, a supernatural beast from another world. This entity took the form of a massive horse that could transform into a dragon, and Atoru named her companion Yukiwa.

Driven by tales of a land across the ocean where she might find peace, Atoru traveled to Japan. However, upon arriving in the Tenpō era, she encountered a society deeply suspicious of outsiders. To survive the intense discrimination and persecution directed at foreigners, she was forced to hide her true identity. She used makeup to artificially lighten her bronze skin in an attempt to pass as Japanese. For a time, she and Yukiwa performed together in a circus, but her true heritage was eventually exposed, leading to public revulsion and forcing her to flee. She was later taken in by the cross-dressing priest Genbatsu, who arranged for her to live under the protection of geishas in the red-light district, though she did not become a geisha herself.

Despite her difficult circumstances, Atoru possesses a quiet resilience and a gentle, perceptive nature. She is a mysterious figure, not only because of her Aztec heritage but also because of her unique abilities. She has the power to perceive things that are hidden from others, most notably the Yoi known as Kumoshichi. This creature takes on a human form, but Atoru, along with the protagonist Yukiatsu, is one of the few who can see its true supernatural essence. Her deep connection to Quetzalcoatl also sets her apart, as her prayers directly summoned Yukiwa, linking her to a divine power from a pantheon far from Japan.

Atoru's most significant relationships are with her companion Yukiwa and with the main hero, Ryūdō Yukiatsu. Yukiwa is her constant protector and friend, but the creature is not always stable. During a critical incident when Yukiwa ran wild, Kumoshichi merged with it to restore calm, which had the side effect of granting the horse the ability to speak. Her bond with Yukiatsu is one of profound mutual understanding. Both are outsiders: Yukiatsu is a man haunted by his past and his time in the Other World, a spiritual realm, while Atoru is a foreigner displaced in a hostile land. They share a longing for escape from the pain of their existence, a longing that draws them both to the Other World. Yukiatsu acts as a guardian figure to her, and their relationship deepens beyond simple affection. In a pivotal moment, when Atoru escapes into the Other World, Yukiatsu follows to retrieve her, confessing that he needs her desperately to find a reason to continue living. This confession is what convinces her to return to the world of the living.

Over the course of the story, Atoru evolves from a lonely, hunted survivor into a crucial member of the Ayashi group. Her character arc reaches its climax in the OVA Ayashi Divine Comedy, where she becomes an integral part of a stable time loop. It is revealed that Atoru and the other Ayashi travel back in time to help the young Yukiatsu escape from the Other World in the first place. Her intervention in the past is what allowed him to return to the human realm and begin the events of the main story, making her actions fundamental to the entire narrative. Through her journey, Atoru embodies themes of cultural displacement, the search for belonging, and the idea that even in a world of prejudice and suffering, bonds with others can provide a reason to live.
