OVA
Description
Evangeline A.K. McDowell, whose full name is Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell, is a centuries-old vampire who appears as a key figure in the Negima!? Summer OVA. Despite her ancient history, she maintains the physical form of a ten-year-old girl, standing 130 centimeters tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her youthful appearance is a direct result of her transformation into a Shinso, or True Blood Vampire, which occurred on her tenth birthday during the Hundred Years' War, making her chronologically over six hundred years old.

Originally human and possibly of royal Scottish lineage, Evangeline fled her home after discovering her vampiric nature. Her current state was artificially created by the Mage of the Beginning as part of immortality experiments. After centuries of wandering and even surviving being burned at the stake, she encountered the legendary mage Nagi Springfield. She developed romantic feelings for him, but he ultimately bound her to the grounds of Mahora Academy using a powerful curse known as the Infernus Scholasticus, or School Hell spell, which also severely restricted her magical powers. Nagi promised to free her upon his graduation, but his disappearance five years later left her trapped indefinitely.

In the Summer OVA, Evangeline participates in the class trip to a remote island along with her teacher, Negi Springfield, and her classmates. The OVA finds the group encountering strange creatures, mysterious phenomena, and magical trials that test their teamwork. Evangeline, true to her nature, plays a significant role in these events, contributing to the group's dynamic as they work together to resolve the island's mysteries.

Evangeline's personality is a complex blend of cruelty and latent kindness. She is known for her abrasive and often malevolent demeanor, which has earned her the feared nickname Dark Evangel. However, beneath this harsh exterior lies a more nuanced character. She initially appears antagonistic toward Negi Springfield, Nagi's son, claiming that drinking his blood could break her curse. Over time, this adversarial stance shifts into a grudging mentorship, as she agrees to train Negi in magical combat in exchange for daily payments of his blood. This relationship reveals her hidden sense of responsibility and a capacity for guidance, even if she rarely admits to such soft feelings. She holds a contentious history with Nagi Springfield but develops a respectful, if demanding, dynamic with his son.

Evangeline's motivations are largely defined by her desire for freedom from the curse that traps her at Mahora Academy. For centuries, she has been a prisoner, forced to act as a security informant for the school's dean. Her actions often revolve around finding a way to break this curse or, in the meantime, alleviating her boredom through strategic games or manipulating those around her. Her role in the story evolves from an isolated antagonist to a pivotal ally, acting as a mentor and a powerful, if reluctant, asset in Negi's various quests.

Key relationships define much of her existence. Her sole close companion is the robot Chachamaru Karakuri, who serves as her faithful pactio partner and caretaker, handling all of Evangeline's household needs and following her orders without question. Despite her master-servant relationship with Chachamaru, there is a genuine and deep bond between them. She also interacts with other powerful figures like Jack Rakan and Albireo Imma, though she typically tolerates them more than befriends them. Her involvement in school clubs, specifically the Go and Tea Ceremony clubs, reflects her preference for strategic thinking and traditional, controlled environments.

In terms of character development, Evangeline progresses from being a primary threat to a crucial teacher and guardian figure for Negi. Her arc underscores her tragic immortality; she is a powerful being cursed with eternal youth and confinement, which has made her cynical but also deeply patient. She represents both a cautionary tale and a source of immense strength for the younger generation.

Evangeline possesses a vast arsenal of notable abilities. As a Shinso vampire, she has immortality, rapid regeneration, tolerance to sunlight, and the ability to transform into mist or bats. She is a master of ice and dark magic, capable of casting spells with devastating effects. One of her most powerful techniques is Kosmike Katastrophe, which can freeze an area to absolute zero. She also created a forbidden technique called Magia Erebea, which allows the user to absorb offensive spells into their own body, fusing the spell with their soul to gain immense power at the risk of consuming the user. Other abilities include puppetry using invisible strings, allowing her to control up to three hundred dolls simultaneously, and the creation of pocket dimensions, such as the training resort she uses. Despite her overwhelming power, she has notable weaknesses, including a vulnerability to garlic, leeks, and onions, as well as an inability to swim.
