TV-Series
Description
Moominpappa stands as a central figure within his family, married to Moominmamma and father to Moomintroll, all residing in the Moominhouse. Orphaned early in life, he lived in an orphanage under a strict Hemulen headmistress. Feeling misunderstood, he eventually ran away after falling down an ice-hole while admiring his reflection, deciding to seek fame as an explorer. Venturing through a dark forest, he met the inventor Hodgkins near a water-wheel. Moominpappa then joined Hodgkins, his nephew The Muddler, and their friend The Joxter to finish building a riverboat. The Muddler named it The Oshun Oxtra, a misspelling of "The Ocean Orchestra." They launched the ship by tricking Edward the Booble into overflowing the river.

Their journey downriver to the sea included Moominpappa rescuing a Hemulen's aunt from the Groke, though she was later attacked by Niblings. The group found an island, befriending the Mymble's family and celebrating the island king's 100th birthday. Though they stayed on the island, converting the Oshun Oxtra's navigation hut into a house, Moominpappa longed for more adventures. Hodgkins later built an upgraded ship capable of land, sea, and sky travel, inviting Moominpappa and others on its maiden voyage. During this expedition, they survived a sea-monster attack thanks to Edward the Booble accidentally stepping on it. Moominpappa also rescued Moominmamma from drowning.

Physically resembling other Moomintrolls, he is white and round with a large snout, comparable to a bipedal hippopotamus, and possesses a thin, tufted tail. The 1990 series depicts him with a slight bluish tint. He almost always wears a distinctive black top-hat, uniquely inscribed inside with "M.P. from your M.M." He frequently carries a black cane, primarily for aesthetic reasons rather than necessity.

Characterized as restless and adventure-loving, Moominpappa occasionally yearns for new experiences while remaining committed to his role as an honorable family figure. He considers himself a great thinker, talented storyteller, and fearless traveler, traits his family indulges. Moominmamma especially supports this self-perception, allowing him to play the hero. He spends considerable time writing his life stories in a book titled "Memoirs," commenting the volume of adventures might prevent him from finishing it. Moomintroll believes his father can fix anything if he applies himself.

Moominpappa demonstrates protectiveness, once threatening the Groke to safeguard his household. He maintains friendships with adventurous characters like Wimsy and even Stinky. He also harbors a secret longing to live among the Hattifatteners, explored in a "Tales from Moominvalley" short story. His character draws inspiration from Tove Jansson's father, Viktor "Faffan" Jansson, a sculptor described as melancholic yet enthusiastic about organizing parties, embarking on adventures like storm-watching, and possessing a great love for the sea, friends, and whisky.
