Description
The Chief Sorceress is the primary antagonist of Sasami: Magical Girls Club Season 2. She holds the highest leadership position in the World of Witches, commanding the respect and obedience of all factions within the magical realm, including the Storytellers and other witches. Despite her powerful title, she is ultimately answerable to a mysterious group known only as the executives, ancient witches who have long since abandoned their physical bodies and exist as spiritual entities. Remarkably, she achieved this rank while being among the youngest of the witches, appearing as a young adult alongside her close associate, Itoki.
On the surface, the Chief Sorceress presents herself as a paragon of grace, wisdom, and benevolence, easily mistaken for a kindly mentor or a fairy-tale princess. She is beautiful, charming, and eloquent, effortlessly winning the admiration of those around her, including the members of Sasami’s magical girl club who look up to her as a role model. However, this elegant facade conceals a deeply malicious and resentful true nature. Centuries ago, witches were exiled from the human world, and while most sealed their negative emotions away, the Chief Sorceress secretly cultivated a profound hatred for humanity, viewing the human world as irredeemably corrupt and in need of subjugation by witches.
Her primary motivation is to enact this belief by placing humanity under the control of the magical world. To this end, she orchestrates an ambitious plan that centers on the magical girls from Earth, who are drawn into her schemes during a summer training camp. Her role in the story is to act as the catalyst for the central conflict, manipulating events and characters from behind the scenes to achieve her goal. She is exceptionally skilled at psychological manipulation, preying on the insecurities and desires of others. A key example of this is her treatment of Misao Shinohara, a shy and insecure magical girl. The Chief Sorceress senses Misao's low self-esteem and her wish to be someone special, and uses these vulnerabilities to turn her against her friends. She showers Misao with gifts, praise, and the coveted title of Maiden of the Dawn, all while secretly viewing the girl as nothing more than a disposable pawn to get closer to the true target of her interest, Sasami Iwakura.
The Chief Sorceress develops a particular fascination with Sasami due to the girl's unique and powerful light magic, which she considers essential to her ultimate plan. She initially stages a public contest to bring Sasami and her friends to the magical world, all while acting as a benign host. Her key relationships are defined by manipulation. She is a mentor to the elite magical girl team, Shining Star, who serve her faithfully. Her relationship with Washu, the advisor to the Earth girls, is based on deceit, as Washu initially trusts and works under her before rebelling upon seeing the Chief Sorceress's true colors. Even Itoki, who works directly under her, eventually becomes suspicious of her increasingly erratic and extreme actions.
In terms of development, the character's agenda becomes progressively more extreme and reckless. When her initial plan to use Sasami's magic to revive the powerful executives fails, she does not hesitate to escalate the situation. Despite her cunning, she is not portrayed as a master of long-term strategy, often abandoning her pawns once they have served their purpose. In a moment of desperation and arrogance, she unleashes the entity Keura, an ancient and uncontrollable being of pure negative energy, upon the human world. This final, catastrophic decision backfires spectacularly, as the threat she unleashes proves to be a world-ending danger that she cannot command, ultimately leading to her own undoing.
As expected of her title, the Chief Sorceress is a witch of considerable power and knowledge. She is well-versed in magical history, privy to dark secrets such as the true nature of the Black Cauldron, and is a capable instructor, able to teach the girls to use their powers in ways their human teacher, Washu, could not. While she is a powerful and talented magic user, evenly matched with the formidable Itoki, her primary threat lies not in raw magical strength but in her strategic position, her ability to deceive, and her willingness to exploit the emotions of the young girls who trust her.
