Description
Anna Rossi, from late 19th-century Genoa, Italy, sees her family—husband Pietro and sons Tonio and Marco—struggle under crushing debt from Pietro's charity hospital for the poor. To relieve their hardship, Anna emigrates alone to Argentina, seeking work as a domestic servant to send money home.
Initially in Buenos Aires with a wealthy family, then relocating to Tucumán, Anna maintains monthly contact, offering reassurance and financial support. Her situation collapses due to exploitative employers, the theft of her letters and earnings by relative Francesco Merelli, and a debilitating, unspecified illness. The illness halts her correspondence; her final letter hints at failing health, escalating her family's fears.
Physically broken and emotionally drained in Tucumán, Anna succumbs to profound despair and apathy, refusing vital surgery despite employer and doctor pleas. Her transformation comes when Marco arrives alone from Italy. His presence rekindles her will to live, giving her the strength for the successful operation, shifting her from resignation to hope.
Recovered, Anna returns to Genoa with Marco, reuniting with Pietro and Tonio. Her journey traces maternal sacrifice in economic migration, vulnerability, and restoration through familial bonds.
