Description
Lady Isabel, known as Atena, is the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Athena, the deity of wisdom and defensive war. In the 20th century, she was raised as the adopted granddaughter of the billionaire Mitsumasa Kido, who founded the Graad Foundation. As a child, she displayed a spoiled and imperious demeanor, but as she grew older, she became a serious, dutiful, and deeply compassionate young woman, willing to sacrifice everything to protect humanity and her Saints.

In the anime Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter - Sanctuary, Athena faces the resurgence of the Holy War against Hades, the god of the Underworld. The Sanctuary is attacked by resurrected Gold Saints who have been given new lives and bodies by Hades under the command of the former Pope Shion. These Saints are ordered to take Athena’s head. Throughout the Sanctuary arc, Athena remains at the heart of the conflict, guiding the loyal Gold and Bronze Saints. Her most pivotal act is a deliberate and strategic choice: she takes the same dagger that was once used to attempt her assassination and stabs herself, thereby allowing her soul to descend into the Underworld to confront Hades personally. This self-sacrifice demonstrates her core motivation—ending the cycle of war by fighting the enemy in his own domain, even at the cost of her mortal life.

Athena’s personality is marked by serene authority, deep empathy, and an unwavering sense of justice. She does not view her human incarnation as a burden; instead, she cherishes the emotions and bonds that humanity experiences, believing that love is the force capable of creating miracles. She is protective of her Saints, especially the five Bronze Saints—Pegasus Seiya, Dragon Shiryu, Cygnus Hyoga, Andromeda Shun, and Phoenix Ikki—who have proven their loyalty and strength time and again. Her relationship with Seiya is particularly close, built on mutual trust and shared determination.

Her key relationships in the Sanctuary arc include the loyal Gold Saints who defend her, such as Aries Mu, Leo Aiolia, Scorpio Milo, and Libra Dohko. She also interacts with the resurrected Saints who are forced into opposition, like Gemini Saga, Aquarius Camus, and Capricorn Shura, whom she later helps to redeem. Her bond with the ancient Gold Saint Shion, who was revived by Hades but secretly works to aid her, is also significant.

Athena’s development in this arc shows her transition from a passive symbol of hope to an active participant in the war. She takes command, makes difficult decisions, and ultimately chooses to die in order to win a greater victory. This self-sacrifice deepens her role as a leader who does not merely ask others to fight for her but is willing to give everything herself.

As a goddess, Athena possesses immense divine power. Her cosmo is far superior to that of any mortal and grants her abilities such as healing severe wounds, purifying corrupted souls, and projecting protective barriers. Her blood is especially potent: it can break malignant barriers, empower the cloths of her Saints, and even evolve them into divine armor. She wields the Nike Scepter, which can unleash devastating energy and seal gods, and the Aegis, an indestructible shield given by Zeus that can repel divine weapons. In rare circumstances, she can also use the technique Misopethamenos to slow a person’s heartbeat to a near‑immortal state, prolonging their life. Despite her divine nature, she fights primarily through her cosmo and artifacts rather than hand‑to‑hand combat, relying on her Saints for direct battle. Her wisdom and strategic mind make her the essential commander in the Holy War against Hades.
