Description
Jerome Barberin is Remi's adoptive father, living in the French village of Chavanon. Originally working in Paris, he suffers an injury forcing his return home, where his demeanor hardens into bitterness. During his Paris absence, his wife cared for the infant Remi, whom Jerome had found there. Noting the baby's fine clothing, Jerome speculated Remi came from wealth and initially took him in hoping for future reward.
Returning injured and financially ruined after losing a lawsuit against his employer, Jerome sees Remi solely as a financial drain. He reveals to Remi that he is not their biological child and ruthlessly orchestrates his sale to Vitalis, a traveling performer, despite his wife's vehement objections. This act stems from Jerome's desperate need for money amid deep poverty. He further insists on selling the family cow to cover legal fees from his failed lawsuit.
Jerome's actions cement his role as an antagonist driven by resentment and financial pragmatism. He exhibits no redeeming qualities or development, remaining defined solely by his initial cruelty and transactional view of familial bonds.
