TV-Series
Description
Hone Onna is one of the primary companions of the series' central character. Her name translates directly to "bone woman," which is a fitting description for her true nature as a yōkai, or supernatural spirit. While she typically appears as a beautiful and seductive woman in a long kimono with her hair styled up, her real form is that of a skeleton. She is a skilled investigator who often operates in the human world, using her abilities to gather information on clients and their targets. To carry out this role, she frequently adopts aliases, the most common of which is Sone Anna.
Before becoming a yōkai, Hone Onna was a human woman named Tsuyu, who lived during what appears to be the Edo period. Her life was marked by profound betrayal. After falling in love with a man named Shinsaburo, he deceived her and sold her into a brothel to settle his own debts. While working there, she formed a close bond with a younger prostitute named Kiyo, whom she treated like a younger sister. Tsuyu planned an escape for Kiyo with a man named Tetsuya, who truly loved her, putting the younger woman’s welfare before her own. However, Kiyo, driven by jealousy, betrayed Tsuyu to the brothel owner. As a result, Tsuyu and Tetsuya were violently murdered, and Tsuyu's body was thrown into a river. Her corpse came to rest on a bank filled with the bones and spirits of other women who had been similarly wronged and discarded. These spirits, sharing her grudge and sorrow, merged with her soul and transformed her into the yōkai known as Hone Onna.
After her transformation, Hone Onna wandered, searching for human connection, but her skeletal form would inevitably reveal itself, terrifying those she tried to befriend. She was eventually found and recruited by Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, who offered her a place as a companion. As a result of this tragic past, Hone Onna carries a deep-seated pain and a profound understanding of betrayal, particularly the kind inflicted by men and the jealousy of other women. This history fuels her motivations, making her more sympathetic than her fellow companions to the suffering of the clients they observe. She is often moved by cases that mirror her own experiences, sometimes to the point of expressing a desire to save certain individuals from an eternity of suffering.
In the story, Hone Onna serves as one of Ai Enma's three key agents. Her primary function is to act as a spy and investigator. She is calm, mild-mannered, and displays a sisterly demeanor most of the time. However, she has a notable distaste for being called "old lady," a teasing insult often hurled at her by the mischievous spirit Kikuri. Among Ai's companions, she is one of the more overtly sympathetic, frequently expressing concern and sorrow for the people caught in the cycle of vengeance. Her key relationships are with her fellow agents, including Ichimokuren and Wanyuudou, as well as with Ai herself, whom she serves loyally.
Her development is most prominently explored in an episode of Hell Girl: Two Mirrors, where her human past is fully revealed. In this episode, she confronts the lingering spirit of Kiyo, who, after her own suicide, has been possessing pregnant, abandoned women and forcing them to take their own lives. This encounter forces Hone Onna to face her history of betrayal directly, and she responds not with a desire for revenge, but with sorrow, asking Ai to one day save Kiyo from her vengeful eternal torment. This moment highlights her capacity for mercy and distinguishes her from other spirits consumed by hatred.
Hone Onna possesses a variety of supernatural abilities befitting her yōkai nature. She can freely travel between the normal world and the Realm of Eternal Twilight. Her most defining ability is to reveal her skeletal form, often using her bony fingers as a weapon to terrify victims or penetrate human flesh. She is also skilled in memory manipulation, able to create illusions to make people believe she is someone they know. She can magically change her clothes to suit her investigative needs and is proficient in throwing knife-like objects that can be engulfed in spiritual blue flames. At Ai's request, she can transform into a dark red straw doll with a red string around its neck, allowing her to be sent to a client as the medium for enacting revenge.
