Created by Senbei Norimaki in his home laboratory, Arale Norimaki is an android designed to resemble a young girl. Senbei introduces her as his younger sister or daughter to hide her artificial nature from Penguin Village. Her appearance features purple hair (brown in the 1997 anime) and glasses correcting severe nearsightedness, her sole physical flaw despite being the world's first perfect android. Her design evolved to appear shorter and more childlike, later retconned as her using multiple bodies of varying sizes.
Arale displays a naive, energetic, and carefree personality typical of a young child, yet exhibits advanced intelligence by solving complex equations or performing medical procedures. She frequently uses phrases like "N'cha" (greeting), "Bye'cha" (goodbye), "Hoyoyo" (bewilderment), and emits a "Kiiin" sound while running arms outstretched. Her interests encompass Japanese superhero shows, monster films, and poking feces with sticks—a noted weakness adversaries exploit. Her pure heart allows her to ride the Kinto'un cloud.
The Norimaki family grows when Arale and Senbei find an egg during a prehistoric time-travel trip; it hatches into Gatchan, a winged creature Arale adopts. Senbei later marries Midori Yamabuki, and they have a biological son named Turbo. Gatchan eventually splits into two separate entities. Key events include Arale enrolling at Penguin Village Middle School, astonishing classmates and teachers with her superhuman strength and intellect. She befriends Akane Kimidori and the Soramame brothers (Taro and Peasuke), joining Akane's "Sukeban Deka Fan Club."
Arale's surreal escapades involve being kidnapped by villains like Dr. Monster or bank robbers, incidents ending comically due to her obliviousness to danger and immense power. She travels through time using Senbei's "Mr. Time" machine, visits prehistoric eras, and inadvertently causes planetary-scale havoc, such as splitting the Earth with a punch or enlarging the moon. In one incident, she and Akane misuse Senbei’s "Reality Machine," transforming his lab into a cosmic replica. Alien encounters, like with King Nikochan, resolve absurdly; his ship is eaten by Gatchan after threatening Earth.
Her abilities include superhuman strength, speed (running up to 500 mph), flight via inventions like the "Cola Plane," and combat techniques such as the "Chikyūwari" (Earth-Splitter) punch, headbutts launching foes hundreds of miles, and the "N'chahō" (N'cha Cannon) beam fired from her mouth. She also employs makeshift weapons like a "Watermelon Cannon" for pranks.
Arale appears beyond *Dr. Slump*, notably in the *Dragon Ball* series. She aids Goku during the General Blue Saga, effortlessly defeating Blue after he paralyzes Goku. She later repairs Goku’s Dragon Radar with Senbei’s help and interacts with Vegeta in *Dragon Ball Super*, where her gag-manga physics defy the series' logic. She features in films like *Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure*, games like *Budokai Tenkaichi 3* (using moves like "Ping!" and "Woohoo!"), and the 1999 film *Dr. Slump: Arale’s Surprise*, involving a trip to Wonder Island.
