Megumi Kobayashi, a young girl consumed by grief six months after her mother's death, formed an intense attachment to a handmade doll her mother crafted. She named it "Mama," treating it as her sole connection to her lost parent. Megumi became entirely dependent on the doll for comfort, withdrawing socially and confining herself to her room, speaking only to it.

Concerned by her psychological state and isolation, her father directed the family maid, Shizu, to dispose of the doll. Its loss plunged Megumi into inconsolable sobbing. When Mami Sakura promised to retrieve the doll, Megumi's hope briefly returned. Discovering the doll was incinerated and overhearing Mami discuss her father's reasons for discarding it, Megumi reacted with fury and betrayal.
