Description
Nineteen-year-old rōnin Yusaku Godai starts the story living in room 5 of Maison Ikkoku after failing his college entrance exams. He considers moving out due to disruptive neighbors but remains after meeting Kyoko Otonashi, the new building manager, instantly captivated by her. Early on, Godai is portrayed as kind-hearted yet indecisive, prone to daydreaming, and easily manipulated by other tenants who exploit his room and resources.
With Kyoko's encouragement, he eventually enrolls in a less prestigious college and pursues a career in education. He supports himself through part-time work at a nursery school and tutoring jobs, often facing financial instability. His professional path includes student-teaching at Kyoko's former high school, where he encounters Ibuki Yagami, a student whose romantic interest complicates his relationship with Kyoko.
Godai's personality evolves significantly. Initially timid and spacey, he matures into a more responsible and honorable man, motivated by his enduring love for Kyoko. His persistent attempts to confess his feelings are frequently thwarted by fear of rejection or misunderstandings. A key flaw is his inability to firmly reject other romantic interests, like former coworker Kozue Nanao—whom he inadvertently leads on—and Ibuki, whose pursuit creates friction with Kyoko.
His romantic journey centers on overcoming communication barriers with Kyoko, a young widow navigating her past. Their relationship suffers repeated setbacks from Godai's perceived indecisiveness or Kyoko's jealousy. A critical moment occurs when Kozue, believing Godai intends to propose, triggers Kyoko's rage, causing a temporary separation. This culminates in Godai passionately declaring his unwavering devotion to Kyoko, finally solidifying their bond. They later marry and have a daughter, Haruka.
Physically, Godai is handsome, tall, and lean with brown hair and eyes. He typically wears a jacket featuring "Boy's An Non" on the back and left breast.
Beyond Kyoko, his relationships include an antagonistic rivalry with wealthy Shun Mitaka for Kyoko's affection and comedic tensions with Maison Ikkoku tenants: the voyeuristic Yotsuya, the flirtatious Akemi Roppongi, and the intrusive Hanae Ichinose. His grandmother, Yukari Godai, occasionally aids his romantic pursuits.
