Description
Earth Defense Force officer Derek Wildstar, known as Susumu Kodai in Japanese media, lost his parents during a Gamilon planet bomb attack on the Miura Peninsula. This tragedy drove him and his older brother, Alex Wildstar, to join the military. When Alex was initially presumed dead after a battle near Pluto, Derek blamed Captain Avatar for his brother's loss, fueling a fierce desire for revenge against Gamilon and contributing to his early hot-headedness. Alex was later revealed to have survived, choosing to remain on the planet Iscandar with Queen Starsha.
Following Captain Avatar's death, Derek became Deputy Captain aboard the space battleship Argo. His responsibilities grew substantially during the conflict with the Comet Empire, where he served as Acting Captain and Star Force Commander. He commanded the Argo on critical missions, including escort duties and direct combat against Comet Empire fleets. His leadership resolve was tested in high-pressure standoffs, such as refusing to alter course when the Argo nearly collided with the Earth flagship Andromeda.
Derek's personality evolved from impulsive and revenge-driven to disciplined and strategically minded. Early conflicts with comrades over prioritizing combat versus exploration lessened as he gained experience. He developed a romantic relationship with Nova Forrester, the Argo's radar operator and nurse, which progressed to engagement in later missions. His close friendship with the ship's chief navigator, Mark Venture, provided consistent support throughout his command tenure.
Officially promoted to Captain later on, he led the Argo to confront a solar system crisis caused by a runaway thermonuclear reaction in the sun. This mission involved navigating conflicts between the Galman and Bolar factions while seeking a solution to save humanity.
Key traits include his piloting expertise as leader of the Black Tiger fighter squadron and tactical adaptability during encounters with advanced Comet Empire technology like cloaked space submarines. His command style emphasized crew protection and mission completion, often placing himself in frontline risks.
