Description
Discovered as an infant in Paris by the laborer Jérôme Barberin, who noted the baby's fine clothing and hoped for a reward, the foundling is named Rémi. He is raised in the French village of Chavanon by Barberin's wife. For eight years, Rémi believes the Barberins are his true parents until Jérôme, impoverished and embittered after an accident, reveals the truth and sells him to the itinerant street performer Vitalis.

Vitalis, formerly the renowned Italian opera singer Carlo Balzani, becomes Rémi's mentor and protector. He trains Rémi as a musician, teaching him harp and literacy. They journey across France with Vitalis's troupe of trained animals: dogs Capi, Zerbino, and Dolce, plus the monkey Joli-Cœur. Rémi endures hardships, including near-starvation during Vitalis's brief imprisonment. Aboard the riverboat "Swan," he meets Mrs. Milligan and her sickly son Arthur, forging a connection unaware of their familial link.

Tragedy strikes when wolves kill Zerbino and Dolce, Joli-Cœur succumbs to pneumonia, and Vitalis perishes in a bitter Paris winter storm after rescuing Rémi from the exploiter Garofoli. Rémi finds refuge with the Acquin family, gardeners who treat him as kin. He grows close to their mute youngest daughter, Lise, teaching her to read and communicate through a shared Neapolitan song. When a hailstorm destroys the family's greenhouse, Pierre Acquin is jailed for debt, forcing Rémi back onto the roads with only Capi.

Rémi later reunites with Mattia, a musically gifted boy formerly enslaved by Garofoli. They form a performing partnership, Mattia proving a virtuoso violinist. They labor to earn money, aiming to buy a replacement cow for Rémi's foster mother, Barberin's wife. Their journey includes perilous work in a Varses coal mine, where Rémi is trapped underground for a fortnight during a flooding disaster. After escaping, they succeed in gifting the cow to Mother Barberin.

Learning of potential biological parents in England, Rémi and Mattia travel to London. They discover the Driscoll family, who claim Rémi but are exposed as criminals collaborating with James Milligan—Rémi's uncle, who orchestrated his abandonment to usurp the family fortune. Falsely arrested with the Driscolls, Rémi is rescued by Mattia and a circus troupe. Returning to France, Rémi's true identity is confirmed: he is Mrs. Milligan's long-lost son and Arthur's older brother, originally named Richard. James Milligan's schemes are thwarted.

As an adult, Rémi becomes a lawyer and marries Lise, who overcomes her muteness. Mattia is adopted into the Milligan family as Rémi's brother and pursues a career as a violinist. Arthur recovers fully from his chronic illness. Rémi maintains a lifelong practice of visiting Vitalis's grave, honoring his mentor's legacy.
