Description
Cicerone, a black-and-white cat, belongs to a young girl named Sachi. The cat appears exclusively within the "Labyrinth Labyrinthos" segment, accompanying Sachi on a surreal adventure. Cicerone plays hide-and-seek with Sachi inside a traditional Japanese house, initially hiding within an old grandfather clock that serves as a portal to another dimension. The cat exhibits cautious and easily startled behavior, reacting with visible unease to the bizarre phenomena within the labyrinthine world, contrasting Sachi's consistently curious and fearless demeanor.
Throughout their journey, Cicerone encounters numerous strange and unsettling sights: wind-up toys animating, ghostly masked children, disembodied objects like a floating dog collar, and menacing figures such as red-eyed skeletons riding a phantom train. The cat's physical reactions—arching its back, hissing, or displaying wide-eyed fear—act as an audience surrogate, underscoring the environment's inherent strangeness and potential danger. A silent mime occasionally guides them through these shifting spaces.
Cicerone follows Sachi through a mirror portal after she discovers the cat near the grandfather clock. Within the labyrinth, the cat remains a grounded presence amidst shifting perspectives and increasingly abstract visuals. Cicerone reacts with terror to an animated tin can emitting green sparks and later to spectral trolleys manned by skeletons. The bell on the cat’s collar jingles audibly during movement, often punctuating moments of tension or discovery. Their journey concludes at a dilapidated circus tent, where the mime ushers them inside to watch subsequent anthology segments unfold on a screen.
Cicerone's narrative function centers on contrasting Sachi's fearless engagement with the labyrinth while heightening the atmosphere of unease through instinctual reactions to the unknown.
