Description
Benkei Kuruma served alongside Musashi Tomoe in the Japanese military after the original Getter Team disbanded. During the Shin Dragon catastrophe, he led civilians to underground shelters. There, he discovered an amnesiac Genki Saotome, Dr. Saotome's younger daughter. To protect her from traumatic memories of her sister Michiru's death and her father's alleged murder, Benkei gave her the identity "Kei Kuruma," raising her as his adoptive daughter. He also took the engineer Gai under his protection during this time.
Thirteen years post-devastation, Benkei became a guiding presence in the underground community. He initially provided technical and tactical support to the new Getter Team: Kei, Gai, and the artificial human Go. After Musashi died in battle, Benkei reluctantly stepped into his role as pilot of Shin Getter-3. He struggled to mediate conflicts between original Getter pilots Ryoma Nagare and Hayato Jin while wrestling with his own uncertainties about their mission.
Benkei's commitment strengthened after an encounter with Musashi's spirit, which urged him to protect Kei and fight the extraterrestrial Invaders. He piloted Shin Getter Robo with Ryoma and Hayato in the final space battle. The trio sacrificed themselves using the Shin Shine Spark to destroy the Invaders, ascending to "Getter Valhalla," a metaphysical realm where they joined other pilots in eternal combat.
Other media depict Benkei as Musashi's successor with different storylines. In *Shin Getter Robo*, he pilots Getter Robo G against the Andromeda Country forces before being consumed by Getter Rays during an underground mission. His death in this continuity deeply impacts Ryoma, fostering distrust of Getter technology. Some iterations feature a composite character, "Benkei Musashibō," blending Benkei and Musashi into a single warrior-monk figure.
