Enma Daioh, also known as Kouen, ascended to rule the Yo-kai World after his grandfather, Ancient Enma. As ruler in the "present" timeline, he displayed a deep fascination with human culture, frequently visiting the human world disguised to observe interactions between humans and Yo-kai. This curiosity fueled his optimistic vision for peaceful coexistence. He formed a strong bond with the human Yo-kai Watch user Nate, considering him a trusted friend, and relied on his assistant Zazel for counsel. Enma also demonstrated ruthless judgment, banishing Yo-kai like Ed Zoff to the Infinite Inferno for their crimes. He could unleash devastating power when enraged, experiencing his first Awakening after Zazel's apparent death.
Thirty years later, during the Shadowside era, Enma was overthrown and imprisoned by his rival Lord Ananta. Stripped of his title and referred to simply as "Enma," he remained aware of emerging threats like the extraterrestrial Yo-kai virus Onimaro, which infected humans, amplifying their malice and transforming them into Kaodeka Oni. From imprisonment, he orchestrated countermeasures, directing Whisper to find a new human wielder for the ancient Yo-kai Watch Arcane. Freed by Zazel, Enma prioritized confronting the Onimaro crisis over reclaiming his throne.
To combat the Onimaro leader Rasen, Enma sought the legendary Fudou Raimeiken sword sealed in the Chamber of Dreams. This quest led to a duel with Ananta, whom Enma defeated before persuading him into an alliance against Rasen. Enma later entrusted the Fudou Raimeiken to the human Touma, enabling him to behead Rasen. After the conflict, Enma formally designated Ananta as his successor, solidifying their reconciliation.
Enma originated as a human named Itsuki Takashiro, a boy who died saving his sister from a Yo-kai. Temporarily reincarnated as a spirit by the Yo-kai Kikuri-hime, Itsuki entered a contest held by Ancient Enma to determine a successor. He defeated the prince Shien, but Shien's malice manifested separately as Soronaki. Forced to fuse with Shien's "good heart," Itsuki became Yasha Enma to defeat Soronaki. After this battle, Yasha Enma separated, and Itsuki combined with Shien's benevolent aspect to form the child who became Lord Enma. Shien's residual malice later resurfaced as Enma's half-brother, Lucas Shiffer.
Physically, Enma appears as a humanoid Yo-kai with ruddy skin, spiky blond hair, and amber eyes, adorned in ornate royal robes featuring flame patterns and gold trimmings. In his Shadowside-era "Awoken" form, he gains additional gold accents, a skull buckle, and puffy cloud-like appendages around his neck and arms. He wields the Enma Blade, a weapon encased in hellfire, and possesses abilities like the "Supreme Enma Blast" and "Hellish Enma Blade." His "Awoken" state significantly amplifies his power, enabling catastrophic attacks when emotionally provoked.
