Description
Pyon-Kichi begins as a common frog in Shakujii Park, Nerima, Tokyo. His fate shifts when middle schooler Hiroshi trips on a rock, accidentally crushing him. This incident triggers Pyon-Kichi’s rebirth as a sentient imprint on Hiroshi’s shirt front, transforming him into a "Flat Surface Frog."

Permanently bound to Hiroshi because the shirt is Hiroshi’s only presentable garment, their dynamic evolves into a sibling-like relationship marked by constant bickering, mutual encouragement, and profound loyalty. Both share stubbornness and gluttony.

Though physically confined to the shirt, Pyon-Kichi exhibits surprising capabilities: immense strength allowing him to lift heavy objects with his arms or teeth, and the ability to jump independently—often forcibly dragging Hiroshi along. His personality blazes with relentless determination and hot-blooded spirit. He persistently pursues females across species, including cats, frogs, and humans.

Beyond Hiroshi, he forms deep bonds. Hiroshi’s mother embraces him as her own child. His history includes a poignant romance with Pyonko, a female frog; believing his confined existence would cause her pain, he deliberately mistreated her to push her away in an act of self-sacrifice.

His presence shapes Hiroshi’s daily life and relationships, including with Hiroshi’s girlfriend Kyoko—who initially mistakes Pyon-Kichi for a mere shirt decoration. Living within Nerima’s modest socioeconomic environment profoundly influences his experiences.

Across all adaptations—the original 1972-1974 anime, the 1981-1982 sequel "Shin Dokonjo Gaeru," the 1982 film "Shin Dokonjo Gaeru: Dokonjo Yumemakura," the 2015 live-action drama, and the 2024 short skit "Dokonjo Gaeru Yanen"—Pyon-Kichi retains his core traits and origin. Adult versions of Hiroshi and Pyon-Kichi continue their dynamic in Solmac digestive medicine commercials. The unaired 2013 American live-action/animated pilot also preserved his fundamental premise of being trapped on a shirt, with no significant alterations to his character or background in any iteration.
