Description
Maiko Ōgi, a 38th-generation heir of the hereditary Ōgi exorcist clan, protects Japan from supernatural evil under their patron deity Karura. She is one of twin sisters possessing complementary spiritual abilities; her sister wields the Scroll of Heaven to perceive spirits, while Maiko commands the Scroll of Earth to banish wicked entities.

To fulfill their duties, Maiko and her twin operate undercover as transfer students, investigating and combating supernatural threats. In daily life, Maiko bubbles with energy and a relaxed demeanor, often seen as the high school slacker compared to her studious sister. She possesses notable athletic prowess, holding a black belt in aikido and excelling in sports, and is physically marked by her red hair.

Within their exorcism team, Maiko's primary role involves direct confrontation and elimination of hostile spirits using her Scroll of Earth powers. She operates alongside allies including Kenmochi, a descendant of Abe no Seimei specializing in magical needles; Nishikiori, their government liaison; and fellow student Chikae Ikeda, who possesses spiritual abilities, kenpo training, and becomes Kenmochi's apprentice. Chikae develops romantic feelings for Maiko during their missions.

The sisters' first major documented mission unfolds in Nara. Investigating a curse-related murder targeting Chikae's family, they encounter him and ally with Wani, an onryo spirit from the Nara period who aids them against malevolent entities. This Nara case forms the basis of the animated film. Maiko continues her activities through subsequent cases covered in other adaptations.

Another key figure is Hiroe Ikeda, Chikae's half-brother. Initially involved in the conspiracy that killed their father, Hiroe later operates independently under the alias "Dragon King." He develops a rivalry with Kenmochi while occasionally assisting Maiko's team as a sporadic ally and is a proficient magic user.

Maiko's background and activities remain consistent across the original manga, its sequels, and animated adaptations like the film and OVA series. Her grandmother, Oumi Ōgi, the family's former leader, provides guidance and support despite her official retirement.
