Yuriko Yamamoto
Description
Yuriko Yamamoto is a Japanese actress, voice actress, singer, and narrator born on February 13, 1960, in Hino, Tokyo. She is affiliated with Aoni Production. Her career in entertainment began not in voice acting, but as a singer. She debuted as an idol singer in 1976 while still a high school student, releasing several records. Her first connection to the anime industry came in 1980 when she sang insert songs for the film Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy.
In 1981, Yamamoto made her formal debut as a voice actress, landing the lead role of Sandybell Christie in the television series Hello! Sandybell. This marked the beginning of a prolific career throughout the 1980s and 1990s, during which she became known for her versatile vocal range. She frequently played kind and gentle heroines but also expanded into stronger, more action-oriented characters.
Her filmography from this period is extensive and includes many iconic roles. She is well known as Yuria in the Fist of the North Star series and its theatrical version. She voiced Sara Yuki in Dancouga - Super Beast Machine God, Jun Nonomiya in Hai Step Jun, and the title character in the 1989 series Mahōtsukai Sally. In the science fiction genre, she played Iczer-1 in the influential OVA series Fight! Iczer-One and Rumy in the Gall Force series. Other significant roles from this era include La Mime in Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX, Minerva in Transformers: Super-God Masterforce, Evangeline Mittermeyer in The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Nora Scholar in Nora, and Ria Kinakaamo in Magical Taruruto-kun.
Yamamoto also demonstrated her range by taking on comedic parts, such as Higashi-Matsuyama Yone in a Crayon Shin-chan film, and realistic characters in series like Weekly Story Land. She frequently performed theme songs and character insert songs for the anime in which she starred, leveraging her background as a singer.
As her career progressed, Yamamoto began to focus more on narration work, becoming a familiar voice on television programs. She has continued to take on voice acting roles into the 2010s and 2020s, with parts in major franchises such as One Piece, where she voices Vinsmoke Sora and later Shinobu, and in Witchy Pretty Cure! as the Fairy Queen. Her later work also includes roles in video games like the Shining Force III series and appearances in Detective Conan. Throughout her long career, she has been recognized for her unique tone and her ability to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from gentle heroines to tough fighters, leaving a significant mark on the anime industry of the 1980s and beyond.
