Description
La Mime is a member of the Alozaran race, native to a world in the Algol system that was conquered and drained of resources by the Illumidas empire. She first appears as a secretary to Prime Minister Triter, the puppet ruler installed by the Illumidas on an occupied Earth. Her personal history of loss, having watched her own planet be destroyed from a refugee ship, shapes her deep empathy for others who suffer under the same regime. She becomes romantically involved with Zoll, a warrior from the planet Tokarga, and when she discovers that the Illumidas plan to annihilate Zoll’s homeworld, she secretly warns him. This act of defiance leads her to ally with Captain Harlock, Emeraldas, and Tochiro Oyama, and she later serves as the chief communications officer aboard the Arcadia after Harlock is exiled from Earth.
La Mime is defined by her quiet courage and loyalty. She is not a frontline fighter but uses her position and knowledge to aid the rebellion. Her most notable inner conflict is her profound fear of a mysterious glowing disk encountered during the Arcadia’s travels. She believes it to be the Golden Goddess of Alozaran legend, a being whose appearance signals the end of all things. Despite this terror, she reluctantly agrees to press on when it becomes clear that the disk guards the path to the mythical planet Arcadia. This decision shows her willingness to overcome personal dread for the sake of the mission.
Her relationship with Zoll is central to her character; she risks everything to save him and his people, and after his death she remains loyal to Harlock’s cause. She also develops a bond with the Arcadia’s crew, acting as a calm and steady presence. Over the course of the story, she evolves from a frightened survivor into a resolute member of the pirate crew, finding purpose in the fight for freedom. La Mime possesses no supernatural abilities; her skills lie in communication and administration, and she is not a cyborg, though a cyborg spy impersonates her in a later episode. She is distinct from the similarly named Mime character in other Leiji Matsumoto works, having no psychic powers or alcohol dependence.
