Description
You Hazuki spent her childhood in rural Japan before relocating to Tokyo to live with her father, Toshihiko Hazuki—a photographer recently returned from Peru. They shared their home with her adoptive younger brother Sunny, who accompanied them from Peru. Toshihiko initially forbade volleyball involvement due to unresolved resentment toward her mother, Kanako Tajima, a former volleyball star who abandoned the family to pursue her career. You remained unaware of this maternal link until Tajima surfaced as a sports commentator.

At Hikawa Junior High, her athletic prowess shone through exceptional jumping ability and raw talent, though early struggles included inexperience with team dynamics and clashes with teammates—particularly the initially aloof captain, Nami Hayase. Training under Coach Daimon featured harsh methods, including corporal punishment. A romantic pursuit of Sho Takiki, captain of the boys' volleyball team, ignited rivalry with Nami. Over time, competitive tensions transformed into steadfast friendship with Nami and a spirited rivalry with elite player Eri Takigawa of the Sunlight Players.

Her evolution saw impulsive, attention-seeking behavior yield to disciplined focus. Core traits like fierce determination, a prodigious appetite, and occasional jealousy endured, but professional challenges cultivated emotional maturity. After middle school, she joined the Seven Fighters professional team, bonding with teammates Yogina Yokono and Sori Shinoda. Successes in national championships and open tournaments secured her selection for Japan’s national team ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Learning Kanako Tajima was her mother prompted temporary withdrawal from the national team. Reconciliation involved accepting Tajima’s past choices and refocusing on Olympic ambitions. The national team split into squads A and B, with You leading squad B against rivals like Tulia Kaido. Final arcs depicted international competitions alongside key teammates Nami and Eri.

European adaptations renamed her Mila Hazuki (Italian), Jeanne (French), or Juana (Spanish), adding non-canonical backstories that declared her cousins with Kozue Ayuhara (protagonist of *Attack No. 1*). The 2008 sequel *New Attacker You!* shifted focus to China and new characters, relegating the original protagonist to a peripheral role with an uncharacteristically calm and reserved demeanor.
