OVA
Description
Mikiko Oguro, known by the nickname Kuromi, is the production desk manager at the small animation studio Studio Petit. Her background begins with a childhood love for the fictional anime Luis Monde III, which inspired her to pursue a career in animation. She attended animation school and, upon graduating, was delighted to join Studio Petit, where she was given the nickname Kuromi as an abbreviation of her name. In Animation Runner Kuromi 2, she has already proven herself capable of guiding a single episode through production and is now entrusted with overseeing three different anime series simultaneously.

Personality-wise, Kuromi is young, enthusiastic, and full of energy. She approaches her work with optimism and a belief that nothing is impossible. She is attentive and caring toward her colleagues, often lightening the mood with her positive attitude. Her primary motivation is to produce high-quality anime that she and her team can take pride in. She is willing to go to great lengths to achieve that goal, even when faced with severe time constraints.

Her role in the story is that of the central protagonist and production runner. In the second OVA, she finds herself stretched thin by the workload of three concurrent series. The studio president hires a veteran producer named Takashimadaira to help, but Takashimadaira cares only about meeting deadlines, even if it means sacrificing the quality of the animation. This forces Kuromi into a difficult position: she must decide whether to prioritize the schedule or the artistic integrity of the shows.

Key relationships include the studio’s artists and director. The animators, such as the quick-but-sloppy Tanonaka and the ego-driven Horaguchi, each have distinct personalities that she must manage. The director, Hamako Shihonmatsu, tries to help but is preoccupied with quitting smoking, adding to the chaos. Kuromi’s relationship with Takashimadaira is adversarial because his methods undermine the quality she values. She also interacts with the veteran producer’s two assistants, Tokahara and Kumegawa, who are part of what he calls his animation strike force.

Throughout the story, Kuromi undergoes development as she is forced to make tough ethical choices. She grapples with the tension between delivering on time and maintaining the standard of work. Her resourcefulness is tested as she struggles to salvage the deteriorating key frames that Takashimadaira’s team has rushed. Notable abilities include her skill in coordinating schedules, motivating the staff, and applying triage under pressure. Despite the overwhelming situation, she remains determined to pull off the impossible and deliver a product she can stand behind.
