Description
Misa Hayase is a central character in the science fiction series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. She is a career military officer born into a Japanese family with a long-standing military tradition, the only daughter of Admiral Takashi Hayase. Her mother Sakiko passed away during Misa's childhood. From a young age, Misa aspired to join the military, a goal strengthened by her feelings for her first love, a UN Spacy officer named Riber Fruhling. She enrolled in the UN Spacy Officers' Academy before completing her secondary education, at her father's arrangement, and graduated first in her class. She was then assigned as a bridge officer aboard the SDF-1 Macross with the rank of First Lieutenant.

Riber was killed in action before Misa could confess her feelings to him, an event that contributed to her emotionally restrained demeanor and her intense focus on duty. Throughout the series, Misa is characterized by her discipline, sense of responsibility, and professional competence. She is initially perceived as cold and strict, but this exterior conceals a more vulnerable and caring nature. Over time, she becomes more open about her emotions, particularly as she develops a relationship with pilot Hikaru Ichijyo.

Misa's role in the story is multifaceted. She serves as the Air Group Chief Tactical Officer, also referred to as the chief operator or bridge coordinator, managing the ship's operations during combat. She demonstrates tactical resourcefulness by devising the Daedalus Attack, a maneuver that repurposes a docked landing ship as an offensive weapon when the Macross's main cannon becomes inoperable. She also advocates for accepting Zentradi defectors who have been exposed to human culture and later tries to persuade high command to pursue peaceful negotiations rather than a military strike against the Zentradi. Her strategic thinking and leadership are key to the survival of the SDF-1 Macross during Space War I.

Misa's relationships are central to her development. She forms a close friendship with fellow bridge officer Claudia LaSalle, who becomes her confidante. Her relationship with Hikaru Ichijyo begins with conflict, as he initially disrespects her authority, even calling her an "old hag." As they endure repeated crises together, their relationship evolves into mutual respect, then friendship, and eventually romance. This development places Misa in the series' famous love triangle alongside Hikaru and pop idol Lynn Minmay. Misa also experiences a brief attraction to Lynn Minmay's cousin Kaifun, who physically resembles her deceased first love Riber. Her relationship with her father is complicated, as his strict military upbringing and his handling of her mother's death contributed to her emotional reserve.

Misa's character arc is marked by her journey from a duty-obsessed officer to a person who learns to express her feelings and pursue personal happiness. She reflects on her earlier inability to be direct about her emotions, particularly regarding Riber, and works to overcome that tendency. By the end of the television series, she and Hikaru marry and have a daughter named Miku Ichijyo. Misa is promoted to Major and is selected by Admiral Bruno J. Global to command the long-range colonization vessel SDF-2 Megaroad-01, with Hikaru leading its Valkyrie fighter contingent. The ship departs Earth in 2012 and is later reported missing.

Notable abilities include her exceptional tactical and strategic skills, her command presence, and her capacity for emotional growth. She is a leader who earns respect through her competence and dedication, and her development from a restrained professional to a more open individual defines her role in the narrative.
