Mika Doi
Description
Mika Doi is a veteran Japanese actress, voice actress, and narrator born on August 4, 1956, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Her birth name is Mika Itō. She is affiliated with the talent management firm Mouvement.
Doi's path to performance began with a strong foundation in theater. After her education, she trained at the Modern Theatre Association-affiliated Academy of Comprehensive Arts and subsequently joined the theatre company Gekidan Subaru. She remained a member of Gekidan Subaru for over two decades before leaving on February 15, 2003, to work independently. She established her own personal office, Tomodachi, and later became affiliated with Mouvement. Her theatrical work includes performances in classic plays such as Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Doi is widely recognized for her extensive work in anime, particularly for iconic roles from the 1980s onward. She is perhaps best known as the voice of Misa Hayase in the seminal series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and its related films, a role that brought her early acclaim. Her other major anime roles from this era include Houquet Erose in Genesis Climber Mospeada, Marvel Frozen in Aura Battler Dunbine, and Lana Isavia in The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. In the 1990s, she voiced prominent characters such as Dr. Naoko Akagi in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon, Megumi Takani in Rurouni Kenshin, and Rain Devila in Wedding Peach. Her career has continued steadily into the 21st century with roles like Saori Hyuga in Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star, Kotoko Fujioka in Ouran High School Host Club, Tsumabiki in Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari, and she continues to voice Koby in the long-running series One Piece. She has also been a regular cast member in the Natsume Yūjin-Chō series, playing the role of Nanase.
Beyond anime, Doi has an extensive career in dubbing foreign films and television series into Japanese. She is the long-standing Japanese voice of Disney characters including Daisy Duck and Alice. She is also well-known as the primary dubbing voice for American actress Julia Roberts in many of her films, such as Erin Brockovich, Sleeping with the Enemy, and My Best Friend's Wedding. Her other notable dubbing credits include Marion Ravenwood in the Indiana Jones series, Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones, and Teri Bauer in 24. In addition to character roles, Doi frequently works as a narrator for television programs, documentaries, and commercials.
In recognition of her work, Doi's portrayal of Misa Hayase in Macross earned her the first-place spot in the Character Category at the 6th Annual Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1983, where she also placed second in the Voice Actor Category. Additionally, her album Haruka naru Omoi received the Victor Records In-house Hit Award in 1983.
Outside of voice acting, Doi maintains interests in traditional Japanese arts, including Japanese dance (in which she holds a natori stage name in the Fujima school) and playing the shamisen. She is married to fellow actor and voice actor Kazuaki Ito.
