Description
Hikaru Ichijyo was born on November 4, 1992, in Japan. After his mother's early death, his father, a stunt pilot, raised him. Growing up in a male-dominated household fostered his happy-go-lucky attitude and passion for aviation; he claimed victory in seven amateur flying contests before turning sixteen. His father tragically died in a plane crash, leading family friend and mentor Roy Focker to become his primary guardian. Hikaru flew Fokker D.VII biplanes in his father's flying circus, often trailing Roy in formation while vowing not to remain in his shadow forever.

On February 7, 2009, Hikaru attended the SDF-1 Macross launch ceremony at Roy Focker's invitation. During the event, the ship's automated systems sparked an attack by the Zentradi aliens. Caught in the conflict while test-flying a VF-1D Valkyrie, Hikaru accidentally activated Battroid mode, causing significant damage to Macross City. Amidst the chaos, he rescued civilian Lynn Minmay, and the two became trapped in a section of the ship during its accidental space fold to Pluto. They survived for weeks by rationing food, including a space-caught tuna, forming a close bond. After rescue, Minmay reopened her uncle's restaurant aboard the Macross, while Hikaru reluctantly joined the UN Spacy, opposed to killing but compelled by circumstances.

His military career advanced rapidly due to his exceptional piloting skills. Initially flying a VF-1A Valkyrie, he later led the Vermilion Squadron after a successful rescue mission. He earned promotion to second lieutenant and then first lieutenant. His relationship with bridge officer Misa Hayase began contentiously, marked by his dismissive attitude, including nicknaming her "old woman." However, shared experiences shifted their dynamic: Hikaru saved Misa from a Mars base explosion, they shared a staged kiss to demonstrate "Protoculture" to the Zentradi, and spent an intimate evening together while stranded during the Macross's transformation. When Misa departed for Earth on a diplomatic mission, Hikaru conveyed his concern via Morse code. After Earth's near-total devastation by the Zentradi, Hikaru rescued Misa from the ruins of an Alaskan base, declaring his happiness to survive with her.

Following Space War I, Hikaru spent six months as a test pilot for the VF-4 Lightning III on the moon's Apollo base. His return to Earth reignited a love triangle with Minmay, now a celebrity, and Misa. Minmay's celebrity status and Hikaru's unresolved feelings caused Misa significant pain, leading her to confess her love while preparing to leave on a deep-space mission. This prompted Hikaru to acknowledge his deeper commitment to Misa. They married on October 10, 2011, and had a daughter, Miku, a year later. In 2012, Misa was appointed commander of the SDF-2 Megaroad-01 colonization ship, with Hikaru as captain of its Valkyrie escort squadron. Lynn Minmay joined the expedition as a friend and cultural ambassador. During the ship's launch, Hikaru presented Minmay with a microphone for her final concert before departure. The Megaroad-01 lost contact with Earth in July 2016, and its crew, including Hikaru, Misa, Miku, and Minmay, were declared missing.

In the film "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?," Hikaru's storyline condensed key events from the series. He rescued Minmay during a Zentradi attack, became trapped with her aboard the Macross, and later escaped captivity with Misa after Roy Focker's death. Stranded on a post-apocalyptic Earth, they discovered Protoculture ruins containing lyrics to an ancient song, which Minmay performed to unite Zentradi and Meltrandi forces. The film concluded with Hikaru choosing Misa over Minmay.

Later Macross productions acknowledged Hikaru's legacy. In "Macross 7," a theatrical play titled "Do You Remember Love?" portrayed his actions during Space War I, featuring singer Basara Nekki as Hikaru. "Macross Frontier" displayed his custom VF-1S Valkyrie atop Mihoshi Academy, and protagonist Alto Saotome emulated its color scheme on his VF-25 Messiah fighter. A manga redesign, the VF-1J Kai Valkyrie, incorporated elements from his later mecha, including a modified head unit and livery inspired by the VF-25.

Hikaru's personality evolved throughout his journey. His early clumsiness and emotional guardedness, stemming from his upbringing, gradually gave way to maturity through loss and introspection. The deaths of Roy Focker and subordinate Hayao Kakizaki, coupled with Earth's devastation, led him to confront his motivations as a pilot and his feelings for Misa. His hobbies included building plastic model aircraft, displayed by VF-X-4 and XB-70 Valkyrie models in his quarters.
